Full Version: HOT FUZZ
Bitter But Brilliant > FILM > Action! Drama! Thrills!

I know you guys don't get this for another month but I just wanted to say that it is fab!

I am very biased when it comes to Simon Pegg (for he can do no wrong) but this did make me laugh a lot. The cinema I saw it in was packed and it got a very good reception.

I think that every British comic actor that you can think of was in it and very much a bloke film, not too many female parts but that didn't put me off at all.

If you can find it near you, I highly recommended it.

I can't wait to see this! I think it's great that they brought back familiar faces from Shaun of the Dead (more than just Nick and Simon).
TVJunkie
So, has anyone seen this yet? Our friends in the UK have made this a big hit across the pond, but will the Americans embrace it?
TVJunkie
Well, I don't know if any of you B3ers have seen this yet, but GO!

I had a chance to see this last night and it was HILARIOUS. I love "Shaun of the Dead" anyway, but "Hot Fuzz" is so much better. There's more action, faster/wittier dialog, huge special effects and several LOL moments.

Some of the best stuff are the scenes between Pegg and Frost, where normal "buddy cop" conversation is accentutated by sappy music, perfect for love scenes. And Timothy Dalton is perfectly cast.

Seriously. Go see it.

You too, JDF. Get thee to the theatre.

It rocks.

Saw it tonight. Oh eww. Oh gag! OhMYGOD that's FUNNY.

Even better than Shaun of the Dead.
30MileZone
Saw it this weekend. Really folks. So worth the price of the ticket.

I cannot believe as good as this film is that it isn't doing better in overall box office. I mean, come on! "Blades of Glory" earned more this weekend? What?!?

Perhaps the marketing is all wrong for "Hot Fuzz"? I don't know.

I could not agree more, and I thought Shaun of the Dead was brilliant.

This movie rocked. It was hilarious, full of gross deaths, had lots of action in the last act, and even had a central mystery that was interesting. I'll definitely be buying this one.

It makes me sad that people would rather see the crappy Blades of Glory than this movie.

The press treats Will Ferrell like the second coming of comedy. I like WF, but like Chevy Chase before him, he has half-a-dozen character shticks -- and we've seen them.

It might be that its us Brits taking the piss out of the American love affair with guns. Might not go down too well with some of the audience.

If I weren't so busy cleaning my arsenal, I'd retort, hotly.

I'd respond but I shot the computer up after reading that.

You're scaring me with all this talk of arsenal of guns! I'll have to sit down and have a nice cup of tea!

So, trivia for the film. The girlfriend in the forensics mask at the beginning is Cate Blanchett. The Father Christmas who stabbed Nick Angel was Peter Jackson. The three Best Village judges are Simon Pegg's mum, Edgar Wright's mum and Nick Frost's dad.

If you ever make it to Somerset, go to Wells, which is where this was filmed.

Be careful with that - I've read a lot of Agatha Christie and I know you Brits are quite fond of spiking tea with lethal herbs.

I thought so! I read that she had a cameo in the film, but didn't remember seeing her, and the woman in the forensic gear never removed her mask.

Damn! Saw this opening weekend with a friend and he adores Blanchett. He's going to be so disappointed he didn't pay better attention to her now.

If you guys like this and Shaun of the Dead, may I suggest Severance? Saw it at the TO film fest and found it hilarious. I think it's getting a limited release sometime this month.
Austin16
I saw it this past weekend, and I can see why it might present a marketing problem, because to me it had elements of everything from Die Hard to Miss Marple to Serial Mom.

It doesn't help that a lot of critics make it sound as laugh riotous as a movie like Airplane. I found most of it to be much more low key, bringing on knowing chuckles instead of belly laughs. Once I started thinking of it as a PBS mystery on acid, I really enjoyed it.
WildHoney
I loved it. I saw it when it first opened in my city a few weeks ago. I had to convince my sisters to see it, since they'd never heard of it. We all loved it. I liked it more than Shaun of the Dead also. I thought the mystery part of it was excellent, an added bonus. I'd gone in expecting the hilarious gore and action movie spoofing, but the actual entertaining plot and endearing characters made it so much better than an Airplane! type movie.

I need to see this again.

The DVD of this movie is great. I never, ever listen to commentary tracks, but one of the special features is a "trivia" track. It's the entire movie with trivia popping up throughout, sort of like Pop-Up Video, but not so jokey. It's absolutely addictive. There were things I didn't catch at all the first time. Like, I didn't realize that all the silly questions Butterman asks Angel happen by the end of the movie.

At this point, I would sit down in front of anything that this trio had any part in.

Have you seen Spaced? One of the best British sitcoms of the last decade. That has a trivia thingy for it's second series.
skittlebrau
Damn hell BBC America still hasn't shown the full second season of Spaced. Just like they haven't shown the second season of Life on Mars. But you can watch all the Top Gear you want. ::bitter::

It doesn't look like there are Region 1 DVDs either, which explains why I can't get Spaced through Netflix. I'll have to keep an eye on BBC America for it.

They air season one at like, 1am on Saturdays, but only if there's a full moon and the temperature is below 60 degrees Fahrenheit but ABOVE 55 degrees and NOT if you've been eating more than your share of dairy products allowed by the U.S. Daily Food Groups chart. I think I've seen the first episode of season two, but none of the other ones. They'll air a bunch in a row and then just stop -- then six months later they'll air the same six episodes over again.

At one point I was seriously considering buying a fifth DVD player that will play all regions and buying the UK Region encoded DVDs. You'd think with the popularity of Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead they'd do a small run of Region 1 encoding.

I believe the Spaced series could be available via torrent.

skittlebrau, if you do proceed with your plan to buy a capable DVD player, it's important to take note of the distinction between Region Coding and Format (NTSC vs. PAL).

The SPACED dvds will be Region 2 *AND* in PAL format. So the required player must not only be "region free" -- a feature often easy enough to instill in a regular dvd player via a downloadable patch or keystrokes on the dvd remote* -- but also must be able to play PAL format disc. This latter quality is a bit harder to come by, but select model dvd players available here in the U.S. will play PAL discs.

It's possible to locate PAL capable models using the site below -- click DVD Players on the left sidebar menu and then search for "Multisystem PAL/NTSC" capability.

Yep. Tried that. As with the last half of Life on Mars, something got all FUBAR with the download and it won't play. I think the internet hates me.

I finally watched it last night. I was one of the very few people who didn't like Shaun of the Dead so i stayed away from Hot Fuzz. I realised my mistake after the first five minutes of the movie. It was incredibly funny. I always thought that Timothy Dalton was the worst James Bond but as a mustachioed villain, he was great. I didn't see the twist coming at all and it was one of the best action comedies i had ever seen.
