Full Version: Get Smart
Bitter But Brilliant > FILM > Comedy & Musical

The cast that's shaping up for this one looks really promising.

Steve Carell as Maxwell Smart.

Anne Hathaway as Agent 99.

The Rock as Agent 23, a new character.

And, best of all, Terence Stamp as the head of K.A.O.S.

No word on who's playing The Chief. I beg of you, producers, call Alec Baldwin.

Get out! I have heard nothing of this. I am now officially excited.
Alec Baldwin as Chief? If they don't do that, they're missing a bet. The Rock? I'm in heaven.

A Carell/Hathaway pairing is a little icky, but Carell is such perfect casting as Max, they'll have to screw this up pretty badly to umm, screw it up.

Anne Hathaway seems a little young to play 99. Isn't she, like, 12. Or 21. Whatever. Lauren Graham would make a great Agent 99.

Steve Carrell and Anne Hathaway? Give me more of that. In different ways.

Yeah good casting here. I would actually pick more of a starchy straight man for the Chief. Baldwin to my mind usually carries a wry self-aware persona. Maybe Ken Howard will get a little consideration after his mentor role to Carrell in The Office.

Ed Begley, Jr. as Agent 13! That's my choice. They can all be recycled containers.

Oscar-winner Alan Arkin has been cast as The Chief.

Works for me.

See, now that totally works. He can play the stuffed shirt, get a bit irritated at Max's foibles. Then he can teach Max's daughter how to dance like a stripper.

This is the first I've heard of this and I am officially beside myself with excitement.

I can't wait to see this.

Speaking of which, when did the original Get Smart movie get renamed? When I lived through the first marketing campaign, which didn't get me to actually go see it even though I really liked the TV show, it was called The Nude Bomb. I recently re-recorded it as The Return of Maxwell Smart, which seemed ridiculously lame even before I realized they'd just renamed the earlier movie. Alas.

Anyway, I really like Steve Carrell, but I sure hope he doesn't do an Evan Almighty here. (Which I strongly believe was not his fault, but hey -- he still took the part.)

It's about what I expected. They changed the plot of the original series to make Max this sorta geeky analyst who gets to be an agent. He also used to be really fat apparently. They changed 99's character to be a little more independent-minded (in the original, she sorta took Max's screwups in stride while showing her to be the more competent agent).
There was a couple nods to some of the side plots of the original series-Bill Murray as Agent 13 in a tree (he was a pretty lonely guy), Agent Hymie, etc., and The Craw (no the Claw, the Claw!). The last shoutout you have to look for kinda closely in the beginning of the movie.

Parts of it were actually shot in DC so there's some gratuitous DC shots (including the Smithsonian Castle, posing as the American History Museum). Seigfried in a blatant departure from the original, had a British accent, not Russian. Stharker was probably one of the funniest characters of the movie. The Rock as Agent 23 wasn't too bad either.

Ultimately, my biggest problem of the movie was the changed nature of the relationship between Max and 99 (which was the heart of the original, as far as I'm concerned). 99's straightman routine to Max's ridiculousness ultimately made his screwup's funnier. And all the while, she loved him, allowing the audience to forge a bond with the character as well. The movie is a product of the 21st century, I guess, where a relationship like Max and 99's in the original series is simply not acceptable anymore.

CNN Interviews Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway

QUOTE
Hathaway: There's a great story about Terence (Stamp). He was switching hotels when we were shooting in Montreal. He just went downstairs and he couldn't find a taxi. He was standing around looking for a taxi and some guy just drove up and went, "Zod?" And he goes, "Yes." And the guy goes, "What are you doing in Montreal?" "I'm making a movie. Can you give me a ride?" And the guy goes, "Absolutely." So the guy drove him to his hotel.

AP: I hope the guy didn't make him say, "Kneel before Zod."

Carell: I'm sure he's had to say it to like, cash a check.
Mike-El
Awesome. He should've told the cabbie, "Zod moves about on Planet Hooston as it pleases him."
