Full Version: GRAMMY AWARDS
Bitter But Brilliant > TELEVISION > TV Potpourri

copssister
The rumor has been confirmed. The Police will reunite to open up the 2007 Grammys.

On 2/11; my jeans will be pegged, collar flipped, and my mall bangs teased all day in anticipation.
DodgerGirl
Oh mah gawd! You made my day, copssister!
ladybug
I will of course forget to tape this.
DodgerGirl
I will have both VCRs and DVR taping this, plus friends on the west coast on stand by JUST IN CASE. Got your back, ladybug.
ladybug
Thank you.

I don't think I can watch anything that suggests a Justin Timberlake record is "Album of the Year" worthy.
jedzz
I just watch the Police perform on the Grammys, and damn, before tonight I never thought Sting could ever be cool again. Who knew?
TVJunkie
I didn't even watch. How was the contest winner that performed with Timberlake? How were the Dixie Chicks? Any other good performances? Do I need to search YouTube before CBS orders all the videos taken down?
DodgerGirl
Eeeee! The Police!! Who cares about the rest? wink.gif

I thought the contest winner was pretty good with Justin when they covered "Ain't No Sunshine," but when they segued into Justin's song, and then T.I. came out, I think she sort of looked a little lost. I mean, gamely trying to keep up, but it looked like work. She had a pleasant voice.

Justin's first performance though? With the weird handheld camera? Not a good angle for him (or probably any human), but I'll give him a round of applause for trying something different.

I liked the Chicks performance, but I'm pretty biased because I wanted them to win.

That was a surprisingly non-bad Grammys. The Police were great. I loved the Corrine Bailey Rae, John Legend, and John Mayer performance, and Xtina was awesome on the James Brown number. Carrie Underwood and Shakira were good. The contest winner was ok.

Big thumbs down to crappy Rascal Flatts ruining "Hotel California." Did the Dixie Chicks say that Bart Simpson said "Haw haw"? Because it's Nelson Muntz who says that. [/CBG]
ladybug
Mary J Blige won 2 Grammy awards and kicked ass on "Be Without You".

The contest winner chick, that sang with Justin was very good.

Dixie Chicks won album of the year. They sounded and looked great!

They screwed up a Simpsons reference?

BURN THEIR ALBUMS!
IRule
No, she said, "to quote the great Simpsons, 'heh heh'" - she didn't abscribe it to Bart Simpson. I loved that moment because as they were going to commercial, they panned to the section where most of the country artists were sitting and Big & Rich and some other twangy dudes who I don't know were sitting stoic and grim faced and Reba McIntyre (who has been kind of shitty to them in the past, and they right back at her) was politely clapping with this pursed smile on her lips. Awesome.

Y'all need to quit picking on Toby. After all, he was so outraged about 9/11 that he went out the very next day and enlisted.

Oh...That's right...He didn't.
DodgerGirl
Again, who cares about the Dixie Chicks?

The Police are touring!
Gizmonicon
I'm happy that Wolfmother won for "Woman" and Bruce Springsteen won twice, and pissed that Tom Petty didn't get anything for "Highway Companion." But The Police made up for a lot of the rest of the show being so damn boring.

BTW, does anyone else think that bit between Don Henley and Scarlett Johanssen, where she asks if he'll give her advice on her upcoming album and he says, NO, was unscripted? She looked a little stunned when he said that, but then again, she is an actress smile.gif
ladybug
I loved the Police and hope to see them on tour. I never saw them the first time. Stuart Copeland was looking so good last night. Thanks for the linkDG. Great news!

I don't know if this is common knowledge (it sure isn't on TWoP, where every female is a dirty stupid h00r and Andy Summers was "out of tune"), but ScarJo is doing an entire album of Tom Waits covers. I kid you not. But Don Henley has a right to be snippy, because his songs were murdered by Rascal Flatts.
ladybug
Say what? Who would buy that album? ScarJo singing Tom Waits? Can she even sing?

<i>As a Tom Waits fan, I think my head just exploded. Which, thankfully, will prevent me from hearing this album.
ladybug
That is just wrong on so many levels. ScarJo is only getting to do this album because she is pretty and semi famous. Why let her butcher Tom Waits music?

When has the ability to sing or not stopped anyone from putting out a CD? I think even Paris Hilton has one. But that could have just been one of my nightmares.

Andy Summers was out of tune? I suppose these are TWoP's own professional musicians making this statement? Ugh.

Stewart Copeland looks wonderful with silver hair. I just wish he'd taped "FUCK YOU" on his drums like in the old days when he hated Sting biggrin.gif
DodgerGirl
I always liked what Stewart said: "It's fun to be the Police for fifteen minutes" but then it's right back to the annoying stuff that broke them up in the first place.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to convince my husband that we should go to Las Vegas around June 15th.
Joe_Lies
My apologies for being late to the discussion. Did anyone else catch a commercial from Prince where he thanked everyone (NFL, CBS, etc) for allowing him to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show? I'd never seen anything like it before and wonder if I didn't imagine the whole damn thing. Of course, he included a clip of him and his special guitar behind the shadowy sheet - HA!
GumOnMyShoe
Joe Lies, I wish I would have caught that, but didn't see it. Maybe he's trying to improve his bad boy image. Classy move.

Speaking of Prince, I've read several things saying he pulled one off at the Superbowl with the sheet and the "special guitar". Rockers have been doing the behind the screen/sheet thing forever, and as far as his guitar, it's the sex symbol, just like the stage was shaped, and he's had that for years. If half the adults watching didn't pick up that it was supposedly phallic, kids wouldn't, so the comparisons out there to him and Janet Jackson are silly, imo.
copssister
Who knew that "It's Not Over" by Daughtry would be the early talk of the red carpet? Ace Young, yeah that dude from Idol, shows up wearing his best t-shirt from 8th grade and claims he wrote the song with Chris. Then Melissa Joan Hart and her husband pop up on the red carpet and he claims he wrote "It's Not Over" for himself, but then gave the song to Chris who changed it up a bit. Do they each get a grammy if they win?

Kanye is so dramatic. That first performance was just... Kanye. But I felt so bad for him when he sang about his mom! Poor guy.

But I'm basically watching for the same reason everyone else probably is, which is to see what condition Amy Winehouse turns up in...

ETA: Hilarious acceptance speech by Kanye. This guy.

I enjoyed it. It was like I was back at Epcot in 1986.

Aretha gave me a headache.
fofanna1
Okay - that's the first time I've ever seen Amy Winehouse, other than in photos. Was she completely out of it or is that just normal behavior for her?
I do like her voice - I really don't like looking at her though - her dance moves are like my 2 year-old granddaughter's.
ghettofabman
Glad that Amy won, even though she looked like she was about to pee on herself on the stage performing.

Aretha looked like the planet Jupiter tonight. Surprised that she doesn't have her own orbit. Somewhere on Sesame Street, a bald and naked Big Bird is freezin' his ASS off.

That was quite animated to what she has been. Of course, she's probably been stoned for every performance the past year.
I liked her reaction when she won. Very genuine and happy.

A woman that large shouldn't be wearing anything with straps that terrifyingly flimsy.

That's tough to answer, because a couple of years ago, she looked and acted like a completely different person than she does now. But in the recent past, it's been very much up for grabs whether she will make it to a given show, much less get all the way through it. So it was better than that. I still don't know what condition she was in to be honest, but she is so talented, she did fine.

So, uhhh... I guess that album is jazz covers of Joni Mitchell songs? It's that good? Really? I guess it could be, I haven't heard it.

Little Richard was terrific, but Jerry Lee Lewis was depressing.

The TWOP thread for this is something, BTW. "Beyonce is fat!" "Who cares if Kanye's mom died?" "Alicia Keys is fat!" "All the guys are hot!" "Aretha is fat!" "Jerry Lee Lewis married his underage cousin! Yuck!" "This snark is HILARIOUS, y'all!" Incisive stuff.
GoodLuckWithThat
An hour into it and I think they've given 3 or 4 awards. What in the hell is the point of a 3 1/2 hour show that will probably run 20 minutes long. Ugh I don't think I can finish it.
salty dog
The Herbie Hancock album is great. And I was glad to see the Album of the Year Grammy go to him because (presumably) of its greatness, not because Herbie has the biggest number of sales or the most appearances on MTV
TeslaNewton
I gave up on the Grammy awards a few years ago, when, out of 110 awards, they handed out 10 over the course of 3+ hours. Just call it the "Grammy Concert" because that's what it is.
max power
My jaw dropped when Herbie Hancock won. Grammy voters are always 40 years behind the times.

I also thought it was terrible that an album of Beatles remixes won Best Soundtrack. Don't get me wrong, I'm no Beatles purist, and I really enjoyed Love, but Once was a moving film that had music written specifically for it. And it's NEWER than 30 years old.

Say what you will about Amy Winehouse and her troubles, but when she's lucid, she's boss. I'm a big fan. She made a great album that won on its own merits.

I want Kanye's digital jacket and light-up sunglasses. It was amusing seeing him getting dissed by everyone.
fofanna1
I'm going to venture into old-fogeydom and say that I don't think that the Grammy Awards and particularly the parties afterwards are appropriate venues for a 6 year-old and a 10 year-old. I get flashbacks into the ruined childhoods of Tatum O'Neal and Drew Barrymore.

The Grammy Awards used to be fun, apparently.
