Fametracker stuff here, yo.
JoJo
I greatly enjoyed the Final Days of Fametracker Forums, especially the Jesus thread.
roseland
The "Your Mother" thread was also very funny.

I think you can find some of the meltdown on Fandom Wank and TWoP Crit.

Ah, found it. Here you go:

TWoP Crit link

I wish more of the old threads had been archived -- it'd be fun to go back and read that crazy.

Calling a female African American celebrity an orangutan, and then self-righteously defending that position, repeatedly? Proudly telling a story about calling someone a "n***er" in a movie theater because he wouldn't give up his seat? And then receiving support from fellow FTers for doing that?
What the FUCK? Okay, first of all, which celebrity was called an orangutan, and who would even say the n-word to another person, much less admit to it in an unrelated setting, and who the hell would cheer them on? I forgot how much the meltdown made me sick as much as I thought it was hilarious.

I forgot how much the meltdown made me sick as much as I thought it was hilarious. 1. A poster called Serena Williams an orangutan. No warning or banning for that poster.

2. The n-word incident was in the Movie Manners thread. IIRC, the poster had gone to the movies with a friend who just happened to be black, so apparently it was okay that she started calling other people in the movie theater the n-word because they were talking.

I think that's what happened, anyway. It's been awhile.

Even now, when some batshit celebrity news happens (like Britney going insane), I think about those Fametracker forums and how the posters would react. Especially the celebrity threads. Now that was some serious, hardcore crazy.
Mike H
I just got to bstewart's "you pissed on the floor!" comment. I always hated him, at FT and at TWoP. Thank God the Queer as Folk thread is gone.
DoubleHelix
The funniest thing about that "How dare you!" comment was that bstewart was (and probably still is) a friend of the powers that be, so he was completely immune from punishment, no matter what his comments. Then he tried to take the preferential treatment that only he got, and apply it to the rest of the posters, making out like they were giant ingrates.

This isn't exactly true. A white movie-goer had a run-in with an African-American movie-goer. At some point, the AA movie-goer referred to the white movie-gover as a "honky" or some other slur (possibly "cracker"). The verbal exchange escalated and the white movie-goer called the AA movie-goer the "n" word. The white movie-goer (who was the poster) posted it as an example of something she had done because she was ashamed of her behavior. You had the inevitable posts of support ("oh, you were mad and we all said things we've regretted when we're angry") and other posters who called "bullshit" on that line of thinking (rightly so, in my opinion). There was also some heated exchanges between the "well, he called her a racial slur first!" and "there's no comparison between the two words" camp. But it was never a consensus that the white movie-goer was just in her actions and the people who felt she was justified were in the minority.
p2c2e
The poster in question was TifferT and she is also the same person who didn't really get why people were appaled that Tracy Gold drove drunk with her kids in the car because who among us hadn't driven drunk!

Thanks for the clarification on the n-word incident. I guess I'd forgotten more than I thought.

I remember that it was "cracker." TifferT said, "It's not the color of your skin that makes you a n*!"

That TifferT was a piece of work.

See, now Paris Hilton's going to jail -- that's exactly the sort of thing the Fametracker forums were made for.
FT aside, bstewart made his biggest impression on me at the Queer as Folk thread on TWoP (which they ended up shutting down...is it still shut down?). If I remember correctly, he would make sweeping generalizations about gay people like they were one monolithic group, and they should be like this and think like this. Sort of like a precursor to BenjyDiMera, except FAR fewer real-life references.

bstewart posts at the PMC forum now. In the Fametracker thread over there, quite a few people complained about him. He registered at least a year or so after FT shutdown. Maybe he thought people would have forgotten what he was like at FT.

Calvin and TheJakes are still going at it in the Britney thread over at PMC. Maybe my memory is fading but I think that thread is so much worse now than it ever was at Fametracker. Cootershorts and *gumsnap* have been replaced. ShortBus and Rerun are what the cool kids are saying now.

I can't believe that it's been over 2 years since the forums closed. I remember after the announcement was made, a farewell type thread was started. At first people were posting how they would have gladly donated to the forums if they had known money was an issue. Basically everyone was saying how sad they were, but then one poster changed the entire mood in that thread. I don't remember who it was or even if they were a popular poster or not. He/she stated how Fametracker had gone downhill and that's pretty much when all hell broke loose. It went from a love fest to a big FU thread.

It's a good forum for the most part. Unfortunately for them, when Fametracker closed down, they somehow ended up with most of the Britney, Jennifer Garner, and (I believe) Keri Russell crazies.
p2c2e
Awww, I completely forgot about the Keri Russell crazies, they and the Tea Leoni crazies were running neck and neck for most rabid anti-fandom of a people who weren't working regularly or at all at the time.
Msquared
Tea Leoni? How could anyone hate Tea Leoni? I never understood the hate they have for her on the current (well, not so current now) Fame Tracker.
Or Keri Russell. The character Felicity gave me a major rash, but how can anyone hate Keri Russell. That's like hating your cute next door neighbor.

It's because she took David Duchovny off the market at the height of X-Files mania.

It was because she was a total famewhore who was constantly on the cover of magazine after magazine or rather happened to be in one issue of Golf for Women. Seriously, when explaining how she was everywhere that was the only example people could come up with.

The celebrity-related message boards were added to the site after FT shut down. No one could remember the name of the actual Greek Princess that was the subject of the site so one poster called it "Princess WTF" in talking about message board options now that FT was gone and it stuck. I mean she should literally shut her mouth. Slack jaws get on my nerves (it was half the reason I hated Shannon in Cycle 1 of America's Next Top Model).

I haven't seen anything about it, but Wing did a Fame Audit on the Sopranos actors in TWoP's Sopranos Recaps and Extras. I doubt it's because she was just itching to do one and couldn't wait until FT started up again.

OTOH I'm creeped out by TheJakes, especially the "aw, let's pat him on the head" thing other posters do to him. He tries hard to seem snarky but he comes across as condescending and pseudo-intellectual.

And I'm sorry, but a supposedly 30 something year old businessman who has spent the last five years or so seriously invested in being a fan and defender of Britney Spears creeps me out. On FT for a long time I thought he was about 17, so I thought, "He's just a horny teenage boy, this infatuation will pass - at least he knows how to spell and use correct grammar." Then he dropped a couple of mentions of his age and going on business trips for his job and I'm like, "No."

Frankly, Calvin creeps me out way more than TheJakes, who I agree is out of his ever loving mind. TheJakes does love his Britney and comes in with some wacked out defensives, but at least you could say that it makes sense to be obsessed about something you like. Calvin posts about Britney ENDLESSLY (the guy has over a 1000 posts, most of them Britney related) and the 'snark' is usually the same tired spiel he's been shoveling for something like 4 years. now It stopped being funny a long time ago and has veered into crazy territory. How long can you possibly 'snark' about Britney, post after post, before it grows tired?

I might also add, that while perusing Princess WTF occasionally, that the only other threads I see him post in are the other teeny bopper girl celebs like Ashlee Simpson or Lindsay Lohan, or girls of that ilk. There's something very creepy about a man that is that bothered about what the 'tweens' are listening to. Who cares? Teenage girls like stupid shit, what's there to get into such a condescending lather about?

Whew, I've been waiting to vent that for awhile. Calvin just gets on my last nerve. Condescending gasbag with an inexplicably huge following at WTF. I really don't get it.

I'm not criticizing legitimate social commentary, and Sternbergh's article did make a lot of good points, but I don't know...the piece just reeked not only of gasbaggery, but of insincerity. I just don't believe that he's that offended by "Stuff White People Like." Plus, as many, many commenters pointed out, his ending line:

QUOTE

Because if there's one thing white people really like, it's pretending to poke fun at themselves while actually being allowed to feel superior.

applies just as much to himself and his article as it does to SWPL and its readers.
polenta
That's an interesting article, JDF. I think the author comes off as trying really hard to convince me of something, but I'm not really sure of what exactly. It reminds me of when your seventh grade teacher tried to show everyone how to write a persuasive essay, except he completely fails and just comes across as a douche. He seems bitter and cannot stop talking about or referencing himself throughout the article.

I love stuffwhitepeoplelike.com and I got the book for my birthday (you can save money and just read the site, it's basically the same thing). I think the author is jealous and resentful that Christian Lander has such a well-written, consistently funny site that quickly turned into a huge success with a book deal and publishing in about a six month period.

Also, the poster in the article's comments section has it right when they say people should stop writing about what's funny and what's not funny.
Joe Don Faker
polenta, what's better than getting the SWPL book as a birthday gift? Winning it in an online contest from The Onion, like me. wink.gif (White people like The Onion. And winning contests. And the superiority that comes with one-upmanship.)

You know that funny Web site Stuff White People Like, the one with the jokes? The Canadian guy who runs it just sold a book to Random House for an advance that publishing insiders said had reached at least $350,000 when it was at auction last week. Unclear how high it ended up climbing, but frankly, $350,000 is already a staggering sum for a paperback inspired by a faddish blog that launched just over two months ago.
Yeah that fermented fruit juice smell you might detect from the New Republic piece could be sour grapes. Dunno, maybe it hasn't been entirely easy watching his old TWoP friends score the big payday from NBCU and then this dude getting a six-figure advance for a different brand of snark.

His main criticism is that the satire isn't potent or funny enough. But obviously it's struck a nerve; and if it's only served to allow people to laugh at themselves, rather than convincing them to stop shopping at Whole Foods (#48) or enjoying hard wood floors (#142), then so what. (I do think the book successfully manages to mock the mindset that suggests what we consume and choose to listen to/view is the totality of what defines us and our importance as people.)

I enjoyed reading a bit at lunchtime. My verdict was…funny. Not cover-to-cover, surely, but what is? Funny enough to enjoy with my rice pudding, for an extra creamy consistency of whiteness. (I did add cinnamon for flavor.)

Anyway polenta and salty dog, maybe we can meet later over soy lattes (#1) after yoga class (#15) and enjoy one of my criterion collection dvds (#106), maybe something by Wes Anderson (#10) or Michel Gondry (#68). If this plan is not acceptable, please accept my apologies (#55).
salty dog
Only if I can bring my Hip Friend of Indeterminate Ethnicity (#34).
polenta
I'll be there is you all want to meet up for an expensive sandwich (#63). I'll probably have on my typical Outdoor Performance Clothes (#87) and New Balance Sneakers (#94). I'm usually surrounded by my plethora of gay friends (#88) and black friends (#14) as I'm really into showing off my Diversity (#7).
Joe Don Faker
Cool! But how am I going to bring my hardwood floor (#142) so we can eat on it outside(#137)?

I had started mid-book today and chewed my way nearly to the end over dinner.

For the New Republic writer (Adam Sternbergh) to say the satire is not barbed enough, makes me wonder if he made it that far (ETA: to be fair, perhaps the more potent entries were written after the march date of the article). While reading one entry provides a playful little tweak, the build-up over many entries is a stinging portrait of a status-obsessed weenie who has built his/her entire identity around carefully gauging, harboring and triumphantly expressing the right opinions over everything consumed, lest he/she lose face in front of his/her hyper-culturally aware friends (and strangers). It's entertaining to read, and the light-hearted could laugh at the particular items or tendencies we identify with -- but I wouldn't say that it lacks punch. It's possible that Sternbergh simply finds the writing to be lazy or without much humor, but I'd venture to guess it equally possible he's in a little too deep to acknowledge the many layers of bullshit the writer is successfully excavating here.

Also the comments section of the article had this curious bit that I missed earlier:

Actually, this is a really interesting situation and perhaps a potential undisclosed conflict of interest. Both Mr. Sternburgh and Christian Lander were both editors, staff writers and contributors at the McGill Tribune (a campus newspaper at McGill University in Montreal where I am currently the outgoing opinion editor). Right now they're both listed as the only two notable contributors on the Tribune's Wikipedia site. Its one Tribune alum criticizing another.
White people say: There can be only one! (or is that just immortal Scottish white people?)
polenta
I found it interesting that Sternbergh identifies Lander early on in the article as an aspiring comedy writer in L.A. Simply focusing on that aspect of Lander's "profession" tends to hide his success as a college instructor. I wonder if Sternbergh read those comments, as they definitely accuse him of being jellus.
zan
I haven't really read Stuff White People Like because the one and only time I read it, it really did kind of reek of "poking fun at Yuppies is fun!" That being said, Sternbergh's article does reflect the old "too sincere Liberal who can't laugh at themselves" way of being.

However, I do think it is kind of funny if either a Fametracker or old college grudge that precipitated the article.
Gladly
This is not a defense of Sternbergh, but I can see where he'd feel a little bitter. He's Man from FUNKLE, yes? His book and that site were never really successful in the way that TWoP is (was?) and Go Fug Yourself (book published with Harper) became. There's been lots of success from what I think of as the DHAK crowd, but it seems to have passed him by.

Or, I don't know, maybe he thought Fametracker was trenchant socio-economic satire that deserved a gigantic book deal of its own rather than the novelty handbook it got.
polenta
Don't forget M. Giant also has a new book out that's getting some nice publicity.

This is a good example of how the popularity of websites and blogs leave some out in the cold without book deals and promotions. People have had personal websites longer than "blogs" but not everyone is reaping the same benefits.
Possalaqua
Isn't Sternbergh/FUNKLE the one who would start topics on the FT forums and then use posters' feedback in published articles about pop culture without acknowledging his sources? If I'm remembering that correctly, he deserves to fizzle out without the FT forums propping him up.
