I figured we must have a few DVD collectors here among us. We can use this thread for news, reviews, and chat.

Just throwing out a couple of questions:

- How often do you buy a DVD of something you've never seen?

- What's on your shelf right now that you've never seen?

Since I hate going to the movies, I take the big plunge on DVD pretty often. It depends on what the reputable movie critics and trusted friends have to say about it.

Right now, I've got Silent Hill, the unrated version of The Descent, and last year's King Kong all waiting to be seen.

I'm not much of a movie watcher, but I have a pile of reality TV DVDs that I haven't watched yet (The Mole, Survivor, etc.). I may not have much money saved up for my retirement, but I'm hooked up when it comes to reality shows.

I have a pile of DVDs that I haven't watched, but they are all burned ones, not ones I bought. If it's a movie I really like, I definitely buy it though. I do have all 4 volumes of James Bond, and I am slowly but surely working my way through 'em!

Mike, I loved The Descent. I'm not sure if your version comes with the alt ending or not, but if it doesn't, make sure you go to YouTube and check out the UK ending - it makes quite a difference.

I bought all of the Matrix DVDs at Christmas when Target had them on sale and haven't watched them yet. I also bought seasons 1 and 2 of West Wing. I am having problems with my DVD player since I got cable. Everytime I put in a DVD I can get sound, but no picture. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I need to borrow someones 5 year old kid to come and figure it out for me.

Don't feel bad, Shirty, I bought a $5 remote at Wal-Mart and programmed it for use on both the TV and DVD player, and now I can't figure out how to use either one. I just keep hitting "input" and hoping for a miracle.

<b>Shirty, have you tried xii's method? It sounds like you've got two inputs (the cable-TV line and the DVD player) that are both received on either Ch. 3 or 4. Your TV should have an "Input" or "Input Select" button on the remote or on the set itself. Next time you put a DVD in and you get some sound, hit that "Input" or "Input Select" button and see if that brings up your DVD picture. Since most TVs sold today have multiple inputs for gadgets (DVD players, game systems, etc.), you may have to press it more than once to cycle through all of them.

Thanks Mike. I will try that this weekend and see if it helps. I also need to see if I can record programs. It has been years since I had cable and now I have my DVD/VCR and a cable box and 3 remotes and I am very confused. I will eventually figure it out, but I am very technology challenged.

I forgot to mention my TV is also almost 20 years old and that may be part of my problem.

Grandma?

It's Netfix all the way for me. It's great for finding a lot of independant films and documentries that I can't get at any local video store.

I figured we must have a few DVD collectors here among us. We can use this thread for news, reviews, and chat.

Just throwing out a couple of questions:

- How often do you buy a DVD of something you've never seen?

- What's on your shelf right now that you've never seen?

My DVD collection is pretty scary (I've been hardcore into buying/collecting since fall of 1999 and have easily spent $20,000.00 in the last 7 years or so on plastic discs) and I'm an avid film fanatic anyway (I really like going to the theater, but there are plenty of things I'll wait for on DVD).

To answer your questions:

1) I used to buy DVDs for films/TV shows I had never seen much more frequently than I do now. Especially in the first few years of my collection, I would buy films that were either well reviewed, considered genuine classics (that I had never rented or watched on AMC/TCM) or were on sale and looked interesting. I've literally gone through half of high school and all of college (and I was a business major, but I took every film class that Emory offered) since I started collecting DVDs, and many, many, many of my favorite films/DVDs were "unseen" purchases.

My DVD purchases have diminished in frequency since college (most of the good stuff has already come out - so I get TV shows, new releases and the occasional (okay, not so occasional) double-dip/updated edition). I've purchased seasons of TV shows I haven't seen in full in the last couple of weeks, but I can't think of any movies I've purchased since the first of the year.

2) When the internet was super-cheap for DVDs and I had tons of disposable income and no bills, I went CRAZY in terms of buying DVDs. As a result, I still probably have things on my shelf that I bought back in 2000 that I may not have watched all the way through (or that I've seen, but not the DVD). I recognize the insanity of buying stuff and then NOT watching it -- I actually started curbing that behavior sometime in 2001, right after I started college, because I realized just how many DVDs I purchased but didn't watch. Just doing a cursory mental scan (I'm at work), I know "Better Luck Tomorrow" is still sealed and on a shelf (and has been for like 3 years -- I KNOW, I KNOW), I've watched parts of seasons 4, 5, 6 and 7 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (I got seasons 4, 5, and 6 recently), but not every single episode. Quills has been on the shelf for ages and ages (I keep forgetting to watch it), I'm sure there are more...but I've gone out of my way over the years to watch everything I buy.

Heh. I've got part one of The Joe Schmo Show waiting to be viewed right now.

"What is going on?" has got to be one of my favorite reality TV quotes of all time. And now I'm off to do the Hutch Dance down the hall.

Joe Schmo season 1 is one of the really underated moments of reality tv. It's really, really funny.

Many of us have been waiting a LOOOOONG time for this one: MGM has announced a 5 June release for The Sergio Leone Anthology, a refurbished, snazzed-up edition of A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, The Bad and the Ugly and Duck, You Sucker! Each film will come with a new transfer and a new Dolby Digital 5.1 sound mix as well as a sea of goodies – commentaries, featurettes and documentaries abound on this set (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’s transfers/mixes/goodies look to be holdovers from that film’s double-disc release from a few years ago). SRP is $89.98.

Oh, and after five fucking years, Twin Peaks Season 2 came out on DVD Tuesday. Too bad the extras are basically a let down. After all the build-up and all the reports of big-whigs being involved with the DVD production, I can only assume that they are holding the good stuff back for the inevitable Complete Series set that comes out later (probably in November...), seeing that now that Season 1 is OOP, they are going to want to release that again anyway.

I'll buy it again if it is released as part of a bigger set - shit, I have the complete series on VHS and the Season 1 DVD in both PAL and NTSC (the PAL release included the pilot, albeit with the weird stand-alone movie ending, but I have the televised pilot on DVD too - from some bootleg/import place), so they will totally get my money, AGAIN - it just sucks that after five freaking years, what we got was not even close to what was promised (or even what was delivered back in Fall 2001).

The pilot situation with Twin Peaks has always pissed me off. I own the season 1 DVDs but am not buying S2. If there is some complete release later I'll consider it, but I probably won't get it because I like S1 more than S2. And on a non-DVD talk note, I just love the Twin Peaks soundtrack.
