So I watched this last night. There were major plotholes, like, why did Jamie Sommers almost die in that car accident, but professor-boyfriend not only was perfectly fine, but was directing the surgery to implant her bionics only a few hours later? <br>The car was stopped by the light pole that completely smashed the passenger's side of the car.

QUOTE (Gladly+Sep 27 2007, 01:01 PM) I did watch it, and I thought it was a little silly. I'd give it another chance though--the pilot tried to cover a lot of ground in a short time. The writing needs to get better, or I don't think I can stick around. I was looking something a little snappier like Alias, and I'm strictly talking about dialogue not plot, because I can buy all the giant plot contrivances in a show like this. I agree with all of this. Jamie's relationship with the surgeon seems kind of odd to me. His answer to the "why are you with me" question was weirdly unflattering; it sounded like he was saying he was dating her as a kind of rebellion against his father and what he's "supposed" to do. If I was Jamie, I'd be thinking, "gee, glad I could be here to help you work out your daddy issues and prove to the world that you're bold enough to date an attractive younger woman." Also, what was the point of the pregnancy? Was it supposed to make the accident more tragic, because she lost the baby? Was it supposed to show us what an awesome dude the surgeon is, because he "did the right thing" and proposed to her? It just seemed awkward and tacked-on to me. I'll give it another try or two, because I'm a sucker for hot women fighting evil, but I'm not optimistic.

I'll probably keep watching this because it's sci fi and it's The Bionic Woman! There's this sci fi geekiness and old show loyalty I have. Plus, it's not horrible.
However, I really was somewhat disappointed because it just wasn't as good as I was hoping for.
I also thought, as someone else mentioned, the boyfriend's answer to the "why are you with me" question was bizarre and didn't really show any "love." Also, I found Jaime's relationship with her sister to be overbearing, and there was no backstory to go along with why. I understand she's playing the surrogate mom and possibly trying too hard. But, why exactly is her sister not allowed to use a computer? That struck me as being very strange and it was never explained. There was too much scanctimoniousness among too many of the characters for me to find them very likeable.

In the original pilot, the sister was deaf and looked like Kelly Osbourne. I found it funny that they replaced her by a thinner and prettier actress and that the character's sole problem is now teenage rebellion.
I think the reason why she isn't allowed near a computer is because she's a hacker.

Yeah, the whole thing struck me as really silly, and not in a good way -- I had much higher expectations for Eick and company. I could barely listen to the dialogue, which was mostly fingernails-on-chalkboard bad. And I'd be perfectly happy if they ditched Michelle Ryan and just followed Starbuck for the remainder of the series.
Also, the fights weren't really that impressive -- they reminded me of nothing so much as Dark Angel, which was a similarly disappointing hot-women-fight-evil show -- and the effects were pretty cheesy. As Alan Sepinwall pointed out recently, effects rarely get better after the pilot.

The second episode was just barely an improvement on the pilot. Honestly, the Wienerlicious fight in Chuck was far more exciting -- and much better staged -- than anything that's appeared on this show so far.
And while I can understand Eick's desire to sprinkle in-jokes wherever he can, I thought it was a little on the cheesy side for the television in the abandoned house to be showing BSG as Our Heroes explored the town. (Looked like the miniseries to me; lots of Viper launches and battlestar explosions were what gave it away.)

Yeah, I find the shout-outs to BSG distracting, and the fight scene between Jaime and the soldier was silly. This is the Bionic Woman, and she can't kick one measly soldier through a wall? Again, Katee Sackhoff gets the best line: "I think someone hacked me!"

Are the writers already on strike? This week's episode had some of the most painful dialogue ever written. Isaiah Washington's character is completely useless and Michelle Ryan still can't act. I was even more evident when Katee Sackoff was onscreen.
On the other hand, maybe it's not Michelle Ryan's fault. Jaime Sommers has been terribly and inconsistantly written. She has nearly zero personnality. In her scenes with her boss, she goes from "Leave me alone!" to "I'm ready for a mission" in mere minutes. While she resents the loss of control over her life, she accepted her loss of humanity way too easily. She learns that her fiancé was a creep that had a secret file on her for a long time and yet she calls him "the only man i ever loved" in the next episode.
Two episodes ago, Jaime's sister wasn't allowed near a computer and yet, on this episode, she was using one to show the family tree.

This show is rapidly approaching the "it's so bad it's good" stage. I don't think Eick set out to make camp, but camp is what he's got. Except for scenes every so often with Katee Sackhoff, who gets all the best lines and has one of the greatest eat-shit-and-die stares ever.

Watched most of the second episode and a few minutes of last night's, scanning through most of it with my bionic remote thumb...
Eh, no one crushed a tennis ball and smiled. Molly Price kinda reminded me of Sars. And yet, no ball busting.
I'd rather see the ad Lee Majors did some years ago that I caught only once during its apparently brief run. In it he was running around with the sounds of his bionic powers (chucka-chucka-chucka), but all the cars (and some pedestrians)were passing him with ease. He tries to negotiate himself over a window, or some kind of ledge, displaying a middle-age gut and a self-effacing lack of grace.
Maybe I'm just an old fart. If this show improves you'll let me know, won't you?

I've watched a couple episodes, and I feel meh about it so far. I know there is some turmoil behind the scenes; maybe when it settles down, it will be better. Maybe it would be better if she were The Byronic Woman. 'And thou art dead...well not quite dead.' I will definitely give this show a go; ST: TNG really sucked the first year it was on, too, and look how it turned out. Executive Producer Glen Morgan, who wrote the template for the show, was let go in the second week of production. They've recast and re-tooled several parts/themes of the show. And there are financial problems--BW is not yet as expensive as Pushing Daisies (at $3M per ep), but the special effects cost a lot more than the network likes to pay for. I predict fewer special effects shots, fewer location shoots, and a lot more character-driven (ie soap opera) writing in future. Funny you should bring up ST:TNG. One of the reasons it sucked in its first year, IIRC, is that the show debuted in the midst of a writer's strike. Paramount had to recycle old scripts from TOS because they had no writers. Now the networks are facing a looming writer's strike in the spring, so we may suddenly see some recycled scripts from the original, 1970s version of BW being broadcast in the spring, if the show lasts that long.

I always thought the goal of a re-imagining was to make the show better, not worse than the original.
I don't even know where to start: the special effects that seemed to have been rejected from Smallville, Michelle Ryan's horrible acting, the annoying sister who likes to drink beer with her ice cream, the over choregraphed fights that end up looking too fake, the secret organisation that is even less effective than CTU's perimeters...and the list goes on.
There is a good drinking game: every time someone says "50 millions", chug a beer. Drunkeness is assured. To me this show has reached train wreck status.

I'm surprised that it got PHed already over at TWoP. I didn't keep up with the show or the forums much, but I thought the traffic was ok. The show's ratings are in the tank (less than 8 million this week), so who knows how much longer it'll be around. I'm still just watching because I'm amazed a show so awful got made at all, much less by one of the forces behind BSG.
I guess I approached it with exactly the wrong mindset. Cyborg, the original Martin Caidin novel that inspired The Six Million Dollar Man, featured a self-loathing Steve Austin who was never sure if he was really man or machine. I figured that a "reimagining" of Bionic Woman might explore some of the same territory. But nope -- it's all about ridiculously thin characterizations, terrible dialogue, schmoopy kissing scenes with the impossibly young and pretty-boy CIA agent (!!) and weirdly forced banter with an (again) impossibly beautiful but bratty sister and the nerd-herd guy back at CTU WTF Group HQ.
Oh, and of course, everyone keeps forgetting that Jaime is bionic, except when they feel like dropping "$50 million" references for the drinking game.

I think I may have been spoiled by Buffy, because during this week's episode all I could think was how much better I liked the show when she was in school and trying to solve crimes/capture criminals while hanging around with her wacky roommate and cute CIA boy. I have no idea how the groundwork would have been laid for that to be the premise of the show, but I was at least enjoying it more than all of the faux-military stuff even though the usuals-plot, acting, dialogue-were still bad.
As for the bionic moves, I think she did some jumping again, some kicking and then, of course, the throwing of the melon. And why did having tarragon make the CIA guy seem too good to be true? This show is just so fucked up.

So, I've been taping this show since the beginning and just got around to watching all five or so episodes last night. And, as I suspected, it's not bad if you watch it all in one sitting. However, I've noticed I just don't give a fuck when Katee Sackhoff isn't involved. One thing that kills me is how inconsistent Miguel Ferrer's character Jonas is. In the pilot he's saying "Kill her" and later on he's snarking off to her about how she has to toe the line and work for his outfit. But then Wednesday night he's so caring and concerned about her, he actually pats her on the back. I dunno, it seems like they haven't figured out whether he's a jerk or not.

What I'm unclear about and what seems like a lot of retconning is the whole "Will stalking Jamie before they ever really met, which implies that the company was grooming her for bionic-ness, but the rest of the cast seemed surprised and annoyed when he brought her in after the car accident, which implies they didn't know he was planning on doing the transplants all along, and yet some people knew Will was a jerk and others didn't" situation.

Yeah, I gave up halfway through this week's episode.
This show can't seem to decide what it wants to be. Sometimes -- especially when Katee Sackhoff is involved -- it seems to be going for a dark, La Femme Nikita style. Then we get cheesey lighthearted stuff with the little sister, followed by the repetitive "I hate lying to my sister" angst. I guess they were trying to mix that all up in a Buffy-ish stew, but they've failed miserably.
And that's on top of all the other stuff said upthread about Michelle Ryan's awfulness, the inconsistent characters, etc.
If I were trying to save this show, I'd have the Agency More Secret Than the CIA blown up, and a mortally wounded Jaime Sommers escapes long enough to find Katee's character, give her the (temporary and flawed) cure the tech guys have developed, and warn her that The Bad Guys will be after her next. The series then becomes a pissed-off Katee on the run, trying to find someone who can help keep her alive without trying to use or manipulate her.

According to convention blogger RoadRunnerDM, Sackoff said at a public Q&A that she has a meeting with one of the producers after Thanksgiving, but does not expect to return to the show even if it does resume production. Sackhoff never came out and explicitly stated the reason for her breakup with the show, but her thinly veiled sassy comments suggested "there isn't a lot of love going on between her and Michelle Ryan," says the blogger.
Sackoff also stated that if the strike continues, Episode 11, the last that BW filmed, could serve as a series finale, if necessary.
