Ok all you fashionistas have at it.
Magpie
Thanks, pmk!

I've got nothing fashion-wise to discuss unless anyone wants to talk handbags. Or buffy's tiara collection.
DodgerGirl
Fashion can be acquired. You acquire fashion by looking at a lot of fashion.

Or at least that's what I've been told.
Magpie
Brenda is my new fashion guru.
ladybug
You have to go against the designer.
woodstove
Coldwater Creek has 60-80% off everything in outlet--good until the 16th.

Interesting title for the thread.
buffyvol
Is this about Guys fashions also? Cuz, I want to go on record saying I'm partial to spandex and feather boas on my men.
ladybug
That was the gospel according to Brenda.

So, serious fashion question: Gauchos, pro or con? I was at a party with a friend a few weeks ago, and we saw a woman wearing red gauchos and flat ankle boots, and you could see her socks. We were ready to pull out our badges and arrest her. My friend still hasn't recovered from the trauma.

My Brenda fashion lesson for the day: Your style is as important as your look.
Juxtaposeur
I'm not really sure what gauchos are, but if they're the short pants that people are wearing with tall boots now, I'm totally torn. They were an absolute no-no for me a few months back but now that I'm hit over the head with them at every turn, I'm kind of growing used to them.

Either way, they're completely preferable to chunky heeled ankle boot/short dress combination because really? People can't see how bad an idea this is?

Msquared
Gauchos are mid-calf and loose around the leg, kind of like an A-line skirt, but they're pants, I guess. They're pretty much a fashion disaster for most people.
QUOTE

Proportion, people. Please.

I still have my gauchos from the last time they were in style. I like to think of them as vintage. But I vow you will never see my socks. That's is just fucked up.

Thank you ladybug. That's all that I ask.
This woman just had no fashion sense at all. I don't even think it was a fashion statement. I think it was a "I found these at TJ Maxx for $8 and they look really comfortable, and I can wear them with my little ski sweater, my Birkenstocks or my little boots" statement. I have no problem with Birkenstocks, or little boots. I love little boots. And I buy most of my clothes at TJ Maxx.
DodgerGirl
Now, there's a good question. At which store do you tend to buy most of your clothes?

TJ MAXX and Target for me and I love them both equally.
Flahdagal
Stein Mart and Bealls.

(Bealls is a Florida thing, I think, sort of like TJ Maxx but better organized. BIG on shorts and other you-now-live-in-Florida-so-getting-dressed-up-means-putting-your-shoes-on stuff.

TJ Maxx if I have time to seriously hunt down stuff. When visiting Raleigh, there is this killer consignment store. Best I've ever been to -- my friends and I called it "rich girls' hand-me-downs".

My gauchos vote: no; at least on me. I can wear slim leg capris but anything else makes me look truncated. And I can't afford truncation.

TJ Maxx and Ross for Less. Good stuff cheap.
I actually found a pair of Levis at TJ Maxx a couple weeks ago, ten minutes after I had been bitching to my husband that they never have Levis. They were $15.

Me to Mike I adore Target and my bank balance shows it. I got a new job a few months ago and spent the afternoon at Kohl's and bought a bunch of new clothes. Best time I had in months and I don't even like to shop for clothes.

I usually shop at Foley's now Macy's, New York & Co, and Forever 21. When they have sales at Foley's now Macy's you can get a ridiculous amount of clothes cheap. And I love Forever 21 for going out clothes since I won't wear the same outfit out twice. Same with Charolette Russe or whatever it's called. Also Walmart lately has some really nice clothes.

Is H&M a discount store like TJ Maxx? I was watching Isaac Mizrahi's show yesterday and he was out on the street asking people where they bought their clothes and tearing his hair out when so many kept saying H&M.

I'm thrilled to say that I haven't shopped in a clothes store for decades. If the Lands' End or JC Penney catalogs don't carry it, I don't own it.

The first time I went into an H&M, I was terrified and nearly ran out crying. There's so much stuff (and my H&M has half a floor of men's clothes. Women have 2 1/2 floors!) and most of it was ugly. I still think there's a fair bit "no fucking way" stuff (on Saturday I saw a hoodie made out of red foam), but I love their business-y clothes, and everything fits like it should be way more expensive.
I think most people compare it to IKEA, in that it's trendy stuff for cheaper than you would expect. And Swedish. The quality ranges between Old Navy and The Gap, I would say.

Part of the fun for me of H&M is trying on the mustard yellow see through nylon maxi dress with no intention whatsoever of buying it. Like having a dressing up box for adults. But they're great for trendy separates and accessories.
Gladly
H&M is really nice for getting those ridiculously trendy things that you know you won't wear again in a year, so you don't mind buying the cheap version.

Yes, I bought and wore a poncho. Don't look at me!

I always try to make myself pick out and try on something I would normally turn my nose up at. Otherwise, I swear, my closet would only have black pants, skirts and tops*, which is my default grab while shopping because it's safe.

Whilst is a great word, I was gutted to hear that it has a Jeeves-ish quality to US ears. Here, have it, and I'm throwing in 'fortnight' as a January special offer. That one's useful.

I have nothing to add to the topic beyond I do own a pair of gauchos which I wear with wedges or knee high boots. No socks are harmed in the making of my outfit.

I'm an Outlet Mall shopper and have been fortunate to have one that carries everything I need within an hour for about the past 15 years. I go about once a year, spend an hour or so at the clearance racks, then camp out in the Harry & David outlet eating Moose Munch samples while the wife shops for the rest of the day.

I own 4 pair of shoes, one of which is always casual Bass loafers. About a month ago we went to the outlet and I replaced my 2-year-old loafers with the exact same model. The funny part is there was another guy standing in the aisle doing the same thing and we were both wearing the old loafers with the seams split out and soles worn off. We both mourned having to break in a new pair. The old ones get retired as yard shoes.

It kills me to give up a pair of beloved shoes or boots. I had a pair of boots that I just couldn't give up, until the inside lining started crumbling, and our house had a flea infestation. I could have dealt with the crumbling lining, but there was no guarantee I could get rid of the fleas that I knew were inside the boots. (I lost quite a few pairs of shoes during that adventure.) I had those boots for at least ten years.

I have been doing a lot of shopping on line--pretty much whomever is having a great sale. TJ Max, Ross, and consignment stores are also on the list. I really hate paying full price for clothes, and my job (which I leave on March 2nd, hopefully never to work again!) doesn't require fashionable stuff.

Back when it did, I really loved Victoria's Secret clothes. Their catalogue has some really cool things, silk suits, tweeds, jersey knits, wonderful 100% cotton blouses and silk blouses...all kinds of cool things, and if you wait for the "white wrapper" special sales and jump on it the moment they happen, before things sell out, you can get some really beautiful clothes.

They are having a sale right now, BTW, although nothing is really leaping out at me, especially not the current crop of suits.

My favorite suit ever was a tweed in cream, oatmeal, various browns, all the way up to chocolate brown, with a short skirt and long jacket. I still love that suit. Put a silk or cashmere turtleneck under that and hot didn't even begin to describe it. It needed a very conservative blouse since the skirt barely cleared the jacket in length. They also have the regular length skirt suits of course, but i waited and waited for that one to go on sale. I was so happy when it finally did!

I wish the stores carried their regular clothes, but the customer service is so wonderful, I don't mind shpping on-line or by phone with them. They are really good about telling you exactly what things look like, and even going and trying them on while you wait. My shoulders are broad, and so I was always about a 10-12 on top, but my hips were small, maybe a 4 or 6 in pants and skirts, so it was tough to buy suits. They would go check for roomy jackets--whatever I needed.

Once they had a great sale on a jersey dress, and it was so cheap, (like $18!) full skirt, belt, tighter bodice, long sleeves, really a nice work outfit, black, would have looked good with boots. Anyway, I asked the lady about it and she said, "It looks good in photos but unless you are at least 5'11" I haven't seen one person who can wear it. It drowns anyone shorter than that, and ends up shroud like. Almost everyone is sending it back. Only one girl here can wear it, and it looks spectacular on her, but the rest of us look like crap in it.

So, I passed. I like that kind of service. Also, they send you return shipping labels and have never been anything but co-operative exchanging for size or credit if you don't like something. If I waited for sales, the (for example) silk suits were better quality than say, Macy's, and less than half the price.

When I do shop -- which is not nearly often enough given the paltry state of my current wardrobe rotation -- I go to Banana Republic or discount stores like TJ Maxx, maybe Daffy's.

Last time I went looking for pants at Banana, they didn't have my size, 36x34, explaining that very few of those are stocked because of lack of demand. Their computers confirmed that this size could not currently be obtained at any Banana Republic store on the island of Manahatta.

What's funny is, that very same night I watched a routine by comedian Greg Giraldo, about his discovery that he had turned overnight from a happening young guy into an "old man." He'd gone into Abercrombie & Fitch, where the saleskids turned to look at him "as if he were walking through a playground with his c*ck in his hand." He asked for 36x34 pants and was told they had to get the ladder out, because that size was placed way up high on the shelf... "yeah, because no one goes in there to buy fat old man pants." Ha ha.

Anyway I usually wait till the Banana people send me a 20% off card in the mail and then get a bunch of stuff at once. Or hit the sale rack in the hope that there's something good among the usual XS and XXL castoffs.

It kills me to spend significant money on clothes. On a lark I once tried on $150 pair of jeans at Urban Outfitters that me and my shopping partner really liked. But to drop that kind of cash on denim... man, it felt like it would require a major revolution in my brain, overturning my entire upbringing and that of my ancestors. I walked away.

Tell me about it. That's why I shop a season behind. I could take your hundred-and-fifty bucks, hit the discount racks at Target, get six or seven shirts, two or three pairs of pants...and still have enough left over for a DVD (so I wouldn't feel it was a completely wasted trip).

Me too! I splurged ($100) on a "better dress" for Christmas Eve from Dillards. Halfway through cocktails at the restaurant my three-year-old buries his nose in the skirt and leaves me with a big snot streak right across the front.

My closet used to be full of Lands' End, until about eight years ago all their colors got so muddy looking. Still love their swimsuits! Coldwater Creek is dead to me with the exception of their jeans, which have lycra in with the denim. Their tactics for making certain items disappear during their sales is fishy, IMO.

If you're looking for a lightweight but warm "three season" jacket, this one from Lands' End rocks. I have the original, not the "improved" version.

I like the Isaac Mizrahi stuff from Target. I recently started a new job that sometimes requires something a little more formal than my usual Levi's and Converse sneakers, and I've found some really nice trousers and blouses there. The construction quality's not that great, but the separates only cost about $15-$25 each, so it's not like I need them to last for years or anything. The only thing that sucks about my town's Target is the shoes. Luckily, I saved so much on clothes I had enough left over to buy a really nice pair of semi-dressy Doc Martens. Those suckers last forever.
Juxtaposeur
I am also a frequent customer of Banana Republic, mainly because I can run in, grab my size and be pretty certain it'll fit me. Jeans included. And their jeans are really the best jeans for me (screw all that Seven for Joe's Citizens of Republic, Denim and Cloth). However, I will drop a small fortune on jeans, mainly because I wear the ever loving hell out of them, so I don't feel guilty spending a lot. I just need to save up a bit before I do so.

I also frequent H&M for reasons stated above. If I want to try a trend, I'll buy a $15 shirt there and wear it a few times before looking at it three months later and thinking, "What in God's name was I thinking buying this? Burn all photographic evidence of me in this."

I should go to TJ Maxx, Century 21, Loehmann's more, however I have a total phobia of these stores. I don't dig for the deals, I'm a terrible bargain hunter, and crowds and inconsiderate walkers make me insane. I do have an awesome friend who thrives in these sorts of establishments, she's like a brand label predator, and we're not the same size so if she sees something she likes but is in my size only, she'll pick it up for me since she's pretty good with my taste. She's never been wrong once. I love that I have an accidental personal shopper.

Random fashion complaint: Why did Uggs make such a strong comeback so soon? It pains me so.

My biggest complaint with them is that they occasionally try to move forward with the times and I can no longer buy the exact same thing I've bought for 15 years. I still miss my nice-fitting, non-lumpy, unshrinkable sweat pants that I stupidly used to paint in one time, thinking I could get more.

Same here, floundering. I still haven't forgiven them for screwing around with the original All Weather Mocs.

I agree, floundering, they "improved" their jacket/cardigans from three low buttons to five and no padding in the shoulders at all and took it from slimming to dowdy in one shot.

I only go to Century 21 as soon as it opens. At that point it is just organized enough that I don't break out in hives and I only do it once a season.

I do most of my shopping at Old Navy for weekend/going out and Banana Republic and New York and Company for work, with a few trips to Macy's when they are having huge sales.

Improved just means cheaper to make for them, I am guessing.

I shop at Banana Republic and Target. I hate trying on clothes and I know what fits. I do most of my shopping online. Always at the sales.

I got Uggs a few years ago because I used to walk 20 minutes to work in all weather. Definitely the wedding dress. It was $350 total, cost of the fabric, lace, and seamstress's fee. She customized a Butterick pattern for me and did a fantastic job.

I think roughly 90% of my closet's contents are from Old Navy. The rest is mostly Target or outlet store clothes. I once owned a pair of $75 Nine West leather boots. I hardly plunk down that much for shoes, but they were special. I wore them for a long time until they started falling apart.

Something that I didn't actually buy, but I still consider expensive: my mom bought me an outfit for a graduation present (to wear under my gown) and she got me these really nice navy colored pants at the Barney's Outlet that were retail priced at $122 (!) but were being sold there for only $54.

So what's the most expensive item everyone's ever bought?

I have a bunch of cheap clothes, including a pile of those $5-$7 t-shirts Target had last fall. I rarely splurge, but when I do, I want something made well that's going to last. My splurge last fall was this art knit sweater from Peruvian Connection. $400, marked down from $550 (dumb hat not included.) It's gorgeous, and warm, and silk-lined. I love it. Peruvian Connection is pricey, but they have frequent sales and their pima cotton basics (t-shirts, tanks, camisoles, skirts, etc.) are much less expensive than anything else they offer and are very well made. Sturdy and durable wardrobe basics if you choose carefully and hold out for sales.

I also refuse to cheap out on work shoes, because I learned the hard way to pamper my feet when I'm pounding concrete floors for 12 hrs+. I like Easy Spirit shoes, and have two pairs to switch out day to day, since letting your shoes completely dry out before wearing them again makes them last significantly longer.
henry
I get a lot of stuff at Kohl's too (since I work there) . The red tag clearance sales are the best if you can handle pawing through racks of junk.

Anyone want any inside buying secrets for Kohl's?

1. The cashiers are empowered to price your purchases however you tell them. If it rings up $19.99 and you say that the sign said $16.99 they will change it. As long as it's not more than 50% off of the original price they don't have to call for a price check or a manager.

2. You have two weeks to bring your receipt back for a price adjustment if you buy something and it later goes on sale. What they don't tell you is that they will actually go up to three weeks again without calling for manager approval.

3. If you buy something for $10 and go to return it without the receipt, the clerk will scan the item to see what the current price is. Now it's on sale for $8 - but if you tell them you paid $10 they will give you the credit for $10.

There's probably more but I can't think of any right now. It's actually a pretty decent place to work.

Even though I have these, I mainly use my LeSportsac bag that came with a little cosmetics bag. (Here is the pattern style of the bag. I forgot what it's called.)

It was a bridesmaid dress. I contributed some of the cash but bride and groom paid most of it. It was a shocking £350. I have worn it once since, but I don't get that many invites to the opera or anywhere else it would look appropriate. I have had a lot of wear out of the matching shoes though.

I only recently realized how nuts some people are about purses. My otherwise super-frugal coupon-cutting friend remarked, "Yeah, you can't get a good handbag for under $500." WTF? Another admitted privately she spent close to $1G on a purse. If I'm going to drop $1G on a purse, it better have $950 in cash inside. And room for my balls, which I'll need to carry around in it.

I went with a friend when she spent more than my rent check for the month on a bag. I wanted to cry the entire time. My most expensive bag was also a coach, approximately $180. I bought it 3 years ago and use it every weekend.

TJ Maxx has some great designer bags at low prices. I got a small Liz Claiborne bag there for only $12.

I only recently realized how nuts some people are about purses. My otherwise super-frugal coupon-cutting friend remarked, "Yeah, you can't get a good handbag for under $500." WTF? Another admitted privately she spent close to $1G on a purse.

Sounds like she wouldn't be opposed to buying a Hermès Birkin bag. I looked it up out of curiosity when that Gilmore Girls episode aired where Logan bought Rory one. Bags that are the same price as cars? No freaking way.

The most expensive item I ever bought was about $2K for an article of clothing my first wife wore every day. (Yeah jewelry counts, too.) I think she out spent it ~40x over in the year after we separated, so in that sense it was a bargain.

For myself, I have spent $200 on a suit, or $150 on a pair of work boots. I've always been reimbursed for the boots. I haven't yet figured out how to get a suit approved on an expense report.

My favourite purse ever cost $5 at a bargain bin at Sears. It was black, and had a black fluffy feathers (like a boa) for trim. Good times!

That being said, I would totally wear very expensive clothing if, you know, I didn't have to pay for it. I'm sure some day I'll win the lottery, right? RIGHT?

Yeah, I like skechers also. The last pair of sneaks I bought were Skechers. 3 years ago. Though, they do look sad now. But $50 over 3 years? Not bad.

Do they have an outlet store were you are at? That is where I get all my Sketchers and they always have the buy one pair get one half off. It's great because you can get 2 pairs of shoes for about $50.

I'm pretty sure the most expensive clothing I've got are my Dansko clogs: one pair in brown and black at about $110 each. They are so comfortable and good for walking, I've never really regretted that purchase. I really only regret that I'm not frivolous enough to buy a red pair.

Do you wear them while topless?
Gladly
Heh. If only I were a talented clogger like Ms. Q. These clogs aren't designed for the kind of wear and tear. I like to imagine Squirrely is like Michael Flatley and needs a new pair of clogs on a weekly basis.

So what's the most expensive item everyone's ever bought?
Clothes and shoes are my weakness, but I've never been one to shop for fun -- I decide what I want or need, and then I go about looking for it. And I buy the same things over and over: black pencil skirts, navy coats, mary janes with 3.5" heel. I've always liked really well-made things so I used to buy a lot of vintage, until that started getting expensive too (I spend more at the shoemaker than I do on the shoes themselves). And I stalk online sales like a little vulture.

But, for the first time in my whole entire life, I'm finally not broke. I had to have these last fall and I paid retail. In my defense, when I wear them I'm like, 5'11" (I've always wanted to be super-tall). And if I were a shoe? This is the shoe I would be.

I wear them walking around in my apartment just for fun, I love them so much.

Haha, my roommate saw a pair almost just like that (except they were red) on some daytime tv fashion show a few weeks ago and nearly died. She's been looking for them ever since. I know dick all about women's shoes and even I think they're hot.

Oh, I do that too! With the most expensive item of clothing I've ever purchased, a pair of trashy D&G shoes with 5-inch, turquoise stiletto heels. I got them from a shop selling second-hand designer clothes, and they cost me £80. For second-hand shoes! When I got home I couldn't quite believe what I'd done.

The most ridiculous thing is, I can't even really wear them out because I walk and/or take public transport everywhere, and they would cripple me after about half-an-hour on the street (or I'd get a heel caught in a crack in the pavement and go flying). So I keep them on my bookshelf where I can look at them every day, and every so often I put them on when doing the chores and pretend to be a slutty housewife for the afternoon.

Why thank you, a.j.. Tell your friend to try zappos.com -- they have a huge selection and she can even search by color. Free shipping! smile.gif

I am also currently doing some freelance work for a graphic-designer friend -- he needs copy for a promotional gift for a high-end shoe/handbag manufacturer to give to its best clients. I balked at first because the fee was so low -- until my friend told me that they're willing to PAY ME IN PRODUCT!! I get to pick three items from their current line!!

L van, those shoes just rendered me speechless. I just kind of wimpered and fell silent.
L van Van
I KNOW! [/monica gellar]

They have a Nike Air sole too! They're totally comfy!

OK, I will stop now.
Gladly
Why don't all heels have a Nike Air sole? Good lord, Cole Haan is a genius.
Msquared
Oh no, L van. If I had those shoes, I'd talk about them endlessly.
little melly
They have a Nike Air sole?? Are you kidding?? Sadly, I have flat feet, and that means many shoes are rendered unwearable to me. But if they had those soles, I could TOTALLY do that!
cassandra
Damn, girl. Those are some HOT shoes.

My favorite bag is from Cole Haan. I bought it on sale for $160 in 2001. It's black leather, square, with brass rings. It's in style to this day. I love it.
L van Van
ALL of these Cole-Haan dress shoes have the Nike Air sole. Casual shoes too! I'm with Gladly, every shoemaker should put those bad boys in, they are like little pillows for the balls of the feet.

Cole-Haan also does the G Series, which is a sporty collection of shoes using Nike Zoom Air technology, whatever that is exactly. I aspire one day to always be super-fashionable at the gym ... I did just recently score a sweet pair of Stella McCartney for Adidas track pants marked down to $70 -- it's a start!

Those shoes...

It would be really ridiculous to plan an Autumn trip to New York on the basis of shoe soles. But yet, by then I'll need some new jeans too, and...

Those shoes...

Oh! My! God!
I want to marry those shoes. If I had a pair to wear, and believe me, I'd wear them ALL the time, I'd be Almost 6'2.

There isn't a whole lot that I wouldn't do for a pair of these

Have you ever idly contemplated replacing your wardrobe with Value Village specials just so What Not to Wear shows up at your door? Those Cole Haan shoes would be worth it!

Oh God, I'd love to be able to wear gorgeous heels like that. But I have horrible balance and tend to alternate between wobbling and lurching in high heels, so I usually stick to flats or kitten heels. I never imagined that at almost 30 I still wouldn't have mastered heels.

I have to get kind of dressed up for work so I buy a lot of clothes at Ann Taylor and Banana Republic, because as others have mentioned the sizes are pretty reliable. I actually buy a lot of BR clothes on eBay because you can get brand new things for decent prices. My casual wardrobe needs an overhaul though.

I usually only think to buy work clothes so I usually feel about 100 years older than my younger hipper friends, who are rocking that whole 80s thing and tunics and formal shorts and whatnot (not that I have any desire to wear formal shorts). I sometimes venture into Urban Outfitters during my lunch hour and end up buying something trendy and overpriced that I'm almost too self-conscious to wear.
qb9b
I forgot about Ann Taylor when were saying where we shop. I shop at Ann Taylor Loft - it is slight cheaper, but still a lot of work appropriate stuff. They have such nice dresses for semi-formal/cocktail situations. You can get a lot of nice stuff on sale, especially online. Last year I got three sweaters for $50 on sale, that would have been worth close to $150.

I'd like to pose another question? Who has most influenced your style? Mine was most influenced by my mother. That woman could dress. She taught me that simple lines and unfussy clothes will always work best. I still follow that. I never wear anything I have to worry about. If you know what looks good on you, you look like you can wear anything.

Dang, I don't know. Maybe Audrey Hepburn. I liked old movies, and I think I generally prefer timeless/classic looks with a tad of artistic bohemian thrown in at times. That, or jeans and a white shirt, or soft sweats. Heh.

Loved the shoes!

Most expensive ever? Boots from Elizabeth Arden long ago, a coach purse that lasted 17 years, and a chocolate brown suede classic style trench coat that I loved loved loved.

I absolutely don't understand the purse craze. At all. Also, I think many of them are ugly as hell and have too many clampy/ruched/chainy/or ugly patterns or initials all over the damn place. I honestly can't see spending even $100 on very many of them. Ugly, pretentious, and too big, and just...huh?

Ditto shoes costing a fortune. Yes, prettier than the ugly purses but damn? Shoes that cost a house payment? For real? Now my boots, on the other hand...yeah, almost a month's rent, but it was a one-time splurge and I loved them, and I had been looking for a pair like that for about 6 years, and they did last 10 years and see me through some wonderful times and some horrid weather. OK fine. I sometimes get the shoe thing.
