It will be interesting to see what Apocalypto{sp? does at the Oscars since it did get a nod at the Golden Globes. Mel Gibson must have 9 lives because that was a terrible mess to be in career wise. He basically snubbed Jewish people not unlike Michael Richards tirade against blacks.

I think Mel will get a fair shake from the Academy. Just as everybody who was anybody in Hollywood weighed in against him when the story first broke, I think that it will be equally important to the film establishment to be seen as forgiving, progressive, and able to separate the art from the artist.

You'll notice I didn't say they'll actually feel that way.
ladybug
Yeah. When most all of the major studios if not all of them are run by Jews. It will all be an act for sure but if he is making them money. I guess it is easy to put your personal feelings aside.
Gracie
Oscar noms are out.

Apocalypto got one for make up and two for sound (unless I missed one somewhere) so maybe that's a message to Mel there..."just keep your mouth shut and look pretty from now on, mmkay?"
DodgerGirl
Jackie Earle Haley is nominated for supporting actor? I just plotzed! Yay! Kelly Leak is BACK!

Hmm. Too many exclamation marks. I need to lie down.

Thanks for the link, Gracie.
TeslaNewton
Aw, too bad so sad Beyonce didn't get a nom, but Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy did. Ironic, eh? Dreamgirls was supposed to be her movie, but it was completely stolen by Jennifer Hudson.
Gatorbait
Kind of like the stage play, too. The Effie role is just magic for whomever plays it. But good for Jennifer.

Moreso, though, is good for Alan Arkin. I love him in general, but he was wonderful as the porn loving, junkie grandpa in "Little Miss Sunshine."

I know, right? I haven't even seen the movie yet, but I was so excited. Kelly Leak! And Marky Mark? And a former Mouseketeer and a former American Idol contestant? I feel strangely fulfilled.

Peter O'Toole! Peter O'Toole! I really like typing "Peter O'Toole!"
jedzz
Ironically, I hear that O'Toole is a really nice guy.

Seriously, good for him.
TeslaNewton
I would love for Peter O'Toole to win, but I think that award is going to Forrest Whitaker (which, by all accounts, he would deserve).
Gladly
I'm not over finding out that Clint Eastwood is older than Peter O'Toole. I lost a bet on that. I'm really torn: I don't know how many chances Forest Whittaker will have at a Best Actor Academy Award since he's traditionally a character actor rather than a lead. But, how many more chances could Peter O'Toole have?

Paradoxically, I think Martin Scorcese gets a lot of mileage out of never having won an Academy Award--sort of like Susan Lucci but on a grander scale. If he wins, though, I think his speech should be really wonderful.

The ceremony should be pretty good since three of the nominated songs are from Dreamgirls. I love Beyonce's "Listen;" it's so way, way over the top.
woodstove
WOO! It's on ABC, so I can actually watch it. (my one channel...sigh.)
Rex Dart
Major disappointment for Dreamgirls, to get neither pic nor director. That's definitely the biggest surprise I see here.

It's silly to predict now when there will be so much more information coming in as we get closer, but I will anyway:

Director: Marty
Actor: Whitaker
Actress: Mirren
Supporting Actor: I guess Arkin? I was prepared to say Murphy, but if they didn't really like the movie...
Supporting Actress: Hudson - they'll at least give it that.
Picture: I guess Departed, but I could totally see Babel or Iwo Jima instead.

Maybe we should run a pool? I think ABC and Yahoo both have had a free thing you can enter.
asphodel
Frankly, I'm just appalled that Cuaron didn't get nominated for Children of Men.

Okay, maybe appalled is a bit strong. But I am damned disappointed.
Flava Flav
I'm not a big fan of Dreamgirls, so I'm happy it wasn't nominated for Best Picture. Even after Little Miss Sunshine won the Producer's Guild award I still thought it wouldn't be up for best picture so that was a pleasant surprise.

Sentimentally I want Peter O'Toole to win Best Actor - I mean, he almost turned down his honorary award because he wanted to win one outright! It would be so great if that came true.

And, on a shallow note, I'm glad Ryan Gosling was nominated so he will be attending, dressed in a tux. And most likely Rachael McAdams will be alongside him.
Gatorbait
But will he be sporting questionable facial hair?

As much as I'd love to see Forrest Whitaker win, ever since he was the only good thing about The Color of Money (and yes I know Paul Newman won his Oscar for that movie, but it was painful) but seriously, and I mean no disrespect, he's no Peter O'Toole.

Even if it's just a make-good Oscar, it's time to finally give one to one of the sparkliest, wittiest, funniest movie stars, ever. This has nothing to do with his acting, but I could listen to him tell his drunken and debauched stories for hours.

Bad News Bear makes good. Good for him! As a child I remember the short-lived tv series "Breaking Away" in which Haley was one of the few actors from the original movie to appear. At the tender age of ten I remember thinking that this guy had take the tv money, while guys like Quaid went on with their movies, how sad. (Wow, that is too young to be so jaded. But the film and tv worlds were more polarized then, compared to now.) Shaun Cassidy was the lead in that series; he was on the cover of Dynamite magazine for his efforts.

Just for my own curiosity, I looked to see to whom Peter O'Toole lost some of his Oscars. It's like he's got the shittiest nomination luck ever. He's lost to Ben Kingley in Gandhi, Marlon Brando in The Godfather, Gregory Peck in To Kill a Mockingbird, Robert DeNiro in Raging Bull and John Wayne in True Grit. So maybe karma lets O'Toole pull a John Wayne this year.
qb9b
I never knew he was nominated for "My Favorite Year." I love that movie!
roseland
Outside of "Princess Bride" MFY is the most quotable movie, ever.
Gladly
I'm listing my picks for Sunday, and this is the first time in years that I don't have money on the outcome, so I'm only doing the biggies:

Picture: I'm picking Babel because Traffic won its year and so did Crash.
Director: Scorsese, it's a terrible pick but I think it could finally be his year.
Actor: Whitaker, but I still think O'Toole could steal because the Academy voters are older.
Actress: Mirren
S. Actor: Murphy, although I think he might have lost this if Norbit had tanked
S. Actress: Hudson
O. Screenplay: Babel, but I'm really unsure about these two categories
A. Screenplay: The Departed

I don't think any of these winners are my personal picks except Whitaker, but this is who I would pick if I were betting.

"Oscar nominated for Best Actress, from Volver, Penelope Cruz. And the 'Volverine' himself, Hugh Jackman."

During the Leonardo-Gore interaction (at about the 9:40PM EST mark) there's a quick shot of Seinfeld in the audience, drawing his hand away from a widened nostril. The question is, was it a pick?

That's not a nice way to talk about Oscar. wink.gif

Outside of the length, I enjoyed watching the proceedings on DVR ... relaxed and funny (Ellen did a nice job) and yet with a respect for the craft. Yes I said "the craft," and you can smack me in the morning. Gotta go to bed now.

Oh, my feminist thought for the night: if the "important" awards are given out at the end, why must Best Actress necessarily precede Best Actor? They should switch it up, yo.

Peter O'Toole is halfway to becoming the Susan Lucci of the Oscars.

The only one of the pictures I've seen this year was Little Miss Sunshine. I'm glad Alan Arkin won.

J-Hud, OSCAR winner! So surreal. She was so classy. But all the haters will be on her case for again "forgetting" to thank Idol, like it's mandatory. dry.gif

Can't be mad at Martin Scorsese for finally getting one. I did like that Lucas poked fun at himself as the odd man out in their little group (because I was saying, "Hey, he doesn't belong there!")

Greatest moment of the night: Al Gore winning Best Powerpoint Presentation.

I liked Ellen as the host. But then again, I was the only one who enjoyed Letterman's hosting stint.

I thought the best laugh was Downey making fun of himself. "That was a typical night for me during the mid-90s!"
TVJunkie
I meant to take a short nap before the show last night so I'd be able to watch the whole show. Unfortunately, the last week caught up with me, and I slept until about 3am.

Glad to see Whittaker won, and Scorsese! Finally! I haven't seen Dreamgirls, and probably won't, so I hope J.Hudson's win was well deserved. Helen Mirren can do no wrong in my eyes. Arkin, I'm sure, gave a great performance. He's just one of those people I am very meh about, but it's the performance on the screen that matters.

Now I have to go search out the complete list of winners.
TeslaNewton
Was it me reading too much into things or did Beyonce seem severely pissed she didn't get any Oscar recognition for Dreamgirls? She seemed really crazy during the Dreamgirls sing-off. And none of those songs won.
TVJunkie
Oh, she can say she's happy for Jennifer all she wants, but you KNOW she's terribly bitter about it. She's been groomed for fame and fortune since she was in diapers. To have that spotlight swiped from her by an American Idol loser? Yeah. You know she's not happy.
qb9b
I love Jack Black, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, so I really loved their little musical number. How long did the awards go over, because I set my DVR to go 15 minutes over and I missed a lot of awards.
Joe Don Faker
It went waaaay over. I think it was due to end at 11:30 PM EST, and the reality was more like 12:30.

ETA: I have the eyebags to prove it. I call them my scorseses.

ETA2: Ellen had a bit near the end where, after commercial break, she appeared with vaccuum cleaner in hand, tidying the carpet and asking the front row stars to lift their legs for clearance. As a past usher, the thing I took note of was all the glittering confetti fluttering down from the ceiling at the very end. More like 'littering confetti' - that shit is like sand at the beach, it's a bitch to clean up.
Rex Dart
VOLVERINE!!!

I thought Ellen was excessively bland -- as safe as Billy Crystal, but at least Billy puts together a little act that is based on the nominated movies and isn't generic for use under all conditions. I didn't think she was anywhere close to Jon Stewart or Chris Rock (although that is a tough standard to live up to ((and although we're never seeing Rock host this thing again.))

I think Norbit doing well might have hurt Murphy rather than helped him, because it said "here's a guy who will cash in and not give a crap." Ultimately, though, I don't think he deserved it (too much of his SNL "Hot Tub!" routine), and the Academy clearly was not thrilled about the movie anyway (it didn't even win Costumes or Song!) I'm not sure Arkin deserved it either -- it was a small part. Based on the reviews, I suspect Haley did, although I have yet to see Little Children. (I'm curious to find out exactly how little they are.)

I have been skeptical of the "Beyonce is jealous of Jennifer Hudson" talk, but B. did make a fool of herself yelling and flailing her arms in her "big number." What the heck was that.

The ceremony was way too long. Just announce the awards, let people speak when they accept them, sing all the songs, tell us who died last year, and add in a bit of comedy done solely by the host. No more aimless montages or interpretive dance numbers!

Oh my god, I'm glad I wasn't reading too much into Beyonce's flailing and shouting. That was bad and funny because girl looked seriously pissed. I thought she was the worst of the three Dreamgirls. JHud was all right, but she seemed off somehow. The third Dreamgirl (I'm sorry, I don't remember her name) was fantastic. I was shocked a Dreamgirls song didn't win, but I wasn't upset.

I also agree with the length. I was bitching about that to my husband. It isn't the speeches that are the problem, it's all the other extraneous crap. Just have a tribute to those who passed and be done with the tributes. And they really should not have had that tribute be at the 3.5 hour mark.

I thought we had ti-vo'ed this (so that we could forward through the commercials and boring parts), but we did somehow not. I just read the Fug Girls' blog of the Oscars on the New York site, and they mentioned that Jaden Smith was a presenter and was charming when he flubbed something. What happened? Heather and Jessica made it sound pretty cute.

Edited to add a link to the FUg Girls' Oscar blog.
Gladly
The only award that I'm a little meh about was giving The Departed best adapted screenplay. If you're adapting another screenplay, how much work did you really do? I've never seen Infernal Affairs, so maybe he really did a rigorous rewrite.

It was such a boring telecast though. Boring, inoffensive patter for the most part, excepting when Ellen was mingling in the audience. Pilobolus? What is heaven's name was that? That troupe came to my high school years ago, and they were entertaining, but I don't think the show really needed them.

There just wasn't anything really awful except running an hour over time. No swan dress. No Soy Bomb. Loosen up, people! Meh, at least there was no piracy message.

He and the little girl from Little Miss Sunshine were presenting. They do their first schtick and list the nominees. Before they name the winner, Jaden reads his next line off the teleprompter, which is something about the list of nominess for the next award, which they were also presenting. The LMS girl kinda catches him then announces the first winner. It was cute.

I haven't seen any of the movies nominated (I rarely do) but stayed up past midnight watching this stuff anyway. Overall it seemed like a fairly watered down field, just based on the winners, and I'm not really anxious to see many of the films that won or were nominated.

Regarding the show, I enjoyed Al Gore's first appearance. But after a couple more times on the podium, it seemed he was trying a little too hard to be funny and hug-a-tree lovable and needed to get the hook to get him away from the microphone. I would truly be interested to see what made the Oscar presentations "Green".

Wasn't the original movie in Chinese? I would think that would require a very rigorous rewrite.

Or just a decent translator who can search and replace "Hong Kong" with Boston. No, I meant to say that I don't know if the screenplay he eventually turned in differed substantially in plot and character from the Chinese original.

I don't feel like doing anything but reading Oscar stuff this morning, I think because I'm sleepy. But, it does mean that I got to read about this backstage nastiness from the E! blog:
QUOTE
9:46 p.m.:  A reporter asks the Sound Mixing winners for Dreamgirls about Kevin O'Connell, one of the Sound Mixing losers for Apocalypto—and one of Oscars all-time losers, now having been vanquished 19 times. "I just wonder what Kevin's trying to do out there by trying to get an award by using sympathy," an absolutely straight-faced Oscar-holding Michael Minkler says. "And Kevin's an okay mixer, but enough's enough about Kevin."

9:47 p.m.:  What?!

9:48 p.m.:  "I think he should just take up another line of work," the Oscar-gloating Minkler adds.

9:49 p.m.:  Huh?!

9:50 p.m.:  Minkler and his team are gone—no chance for a follow-up question.

9:50 p.m.:  I talk to the reporter who asked the question, checking to see if he heard what I heard. "He couldn't have been serious," the reporter says. "But that's what he said."

After they sang about Helen Mirren being hot, and then seeing her throughout the evening, I became convinced of this assertion. She looked great. I liked how she referred to the Oscar as a "gold star" like you'd get in school -- it kind of acknowledged the award's importance and sensibly deflated it a bit at the same time.

Cameron Diaz looked awful. I slept all day today, and got into bed with wet hair, and mine looked better when I woke up than hers did last night.

I watched Fashion Police this evening, and everyone thought Cameron Diaz looked great, except for the hairdresser who was on in the last half of the show. He said he she looked like she'd been dragged through the mud and that mice had chewed on her hair. I agree. Her hair also looked like she colored it herself with reallly cheap hair color.

I loved the detail on Kirsten's dress, and I thought the color was beautiful. And I'm not a fan of pastels. But it should have had either more feathers or none. But I really think she looked terrific.

What bugs me about the fashion police is they criticize some for being to out there and risky and in the next breath, they criticize someone for being too safe.
What the hell was up with Meryl Streep's outfit? Bad proportion, bad design, just bad. Oh well, after all the great movies she's made, I guess she's allowed to wear a crappy outfit on occasion.

Meryl Streep usually looks like she pulled whatever was clean out of the closet and put it on. I think she goes for comfort over glamour.

We want more dead people! I think Peter Boyle and Robert Altman were worth at least two each.
Joe Don Faker
I liked that they showed Peter Boyle in the title role of "Joe," because if you ever watch that (somewhat downbeat) movie, you'll see he nailed the part.

Also love his "Dueling Brandos" with John Belushi on SNL.
Angry Puppy
I don't think that dress did Kirsten any favors. The top of it looks too big around the neckline. But worse is her hair, makeup and pinched up face. If I picture the dress with a collar around the neck giving the dress a halter look with sheer fabric leading down to the "V" at the chest and bare shoulders, I think I'd like it better. But then there's the face and the bright red lips and the hair that could have been so much prettier if it was done in a manner that reflected the feel of the dress.

Oh well.

I think Kirsten's dress is a Rorschach Test. If you look at the shirt and hips first, then scan up, you might like it overall, or be scared by the collar. If you look at the face and make-up first then scan down, you might have a totally different reaction to the feathers.

My eyes are drawn first to the skirt and if I stop at the bust line, then I think it looks great. When I force myself to look face first, then down, it doesn't work.

Oscar nominations are out this morning, and I haven't seen enough of the nominees to quibble with any of them really. The only real bitch I have about the nominees is the Original Song category:

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original song)
"Falling Slowly" from "Once" (Fox Searchlight) Music and Lyric by Glen Hansard and: Marketa Irglova
"Happy Working Song" from "Enchanted" (Walt Disney): Music by Alan Menken; Lyric by Stephen Schwartz
"Raise It Up" from "August Rush" (Warner Bros.): Nominees to be determined
"So Close" from "Enchanted" (Walt Disney): Music by Alan Menken; Lyric by Stephen Schwartz
"That's How You Know" from "Enchanted" (Walt Disney): Music by Alan Menken; Lyric by Stephen Schwartz

Okay, I'm happy that the song from Once was nominated; I love that song. But three songs from Enchanted? Really? Not the song from Into the Wild? I'm sure Enchanted has some great music, but I don't think it should get three nominations.

One nomination I'm really happy about, Amy Ryan, best known to me as Beadie from The Wire, got a supporting nomination! Yay!

Minor note: this thread is in the TV Potpourri forum, should I open another one in the General Film Commentary?

My 'isn't going to happen' wish for this year is Viggo Mortensen for Best Actor. Okay, I haven't actually seen There Will Be Blood or Sweeney Todd yet, but Viggo manages to act so well he doesn't even look like himself in Eastern Promises. If he and Javier Bardem (who should have won in 2001 for Before Night Falls) both won I would be very happy indeed.

I haven't seen any of the Best Actress films so can't comment. But yes, go Beadie!

Johnny Depp is great in the role, and his accent is a million times better than Helena Bonham Carter's (as she once said, it is hard being posh), but I think he'll suffer from a perception that a musical role is 'light' - even though that part absolutely isn't. I still think Viggo's is the best performance I've seen.

I don't know, Daniel Day-Lewis was pretty incredible in There Will Be Blood, which is also my favorite of all the Best Picture nominees.

If only the Oscars ceremony had a shot in hell of being as fun-loving and celebratory as the Spirit Awards. I'm thoroughly enjoying watching the ceremony this afternoon.

so, Miley Cyrus was invited tonight, but Angelina Jolie was not? These are the oddest awards.

Why is she there? And why does she keep pushing her lips out like a duck?

Poor Jennifer Garner. She desperately wanted to get away from Gary Busey.

Did you see the dress on Daniel Day-Lewis' wife? ACK!

SECURITY !! I was waiting for Jen to bust out one of her Alias moves on him.

This is a good example on why winning an Oscar should not allow you a lifetime pass to the awards ceremony. Certainly not clearance to walk the red carpet.

But we'll give a pass to Sally Kirkland, right?

Add Puff Daddy to the Why Are They There list.

Whoa, Marion Cotillard's dress is spectacular.

So far, my favorite dress was worn by Anne Hathaway.

What's up with Ryan Seacrest asking Jessica Alba is she was going to breast feed? He's worse than Joan Rivers.

I think my favorite look of the night belongs to Jennifer Garner. The hair, the dress, the jewelry...all spectacular.

Penelope Cruz got blonde highlights. They look terrible.

Shouldn't the "Gaydolf Titler" joke have been "Benito Titler"? One of the names has to actually be the same as the dictator. Anyway.

Yay for El Guapo, I mean, Javier Bardem.

I think it was an attempt to prove he's not gay. "Boobs are my favorite! I like to touch them. With my hands. Caress them, like... they feel like... boobs! YEAH!"

Ha! Or bags of sand.

I adore Katherine Heigl and think she looks absolutely gorgeous but good lord are the haters going to have a field day with her publicly acknowledging her nerves which admittedly, was a little weird.

ETA: First upset of the night! I was really pulling for Cate in I'm Not There, but Tilda Swinton was very, very good in Michael Clayton.
Gladly
I think Tilda Swinton has amazing features; she's not exactly beautiful, but she's very striking. Wow, though she's a bad dresser. I don't think I've ever seen her look as good as she could at one of these things. She gave a great acceptance speech though. I loved Javier Bardem's too. It's clear he's got good genes from his mom too.

It was a little strange to see Owen Wilson up there presenting. I don't quite know what I expected from that moment.

YAY! Once song!
fofanna1
I loved that movie and the song was so beautiful. I don't have anything against Disney and I loved Enchanted but isn't it delightful to see the "little people" win? You can tell they don't have stylists which just makes the whole thing that much more charming.
Well, isn't this marvelous? Jon Stewart brought her back out because she didn't get a chance to thank anyone.
