During the Leonardo-Gore interaction (at about the 9:40PM EST mark) there's a quick shot of Seinfeld in the audience, drawing his hand away from a widened nostril. The question is, was it a pick?

That's not a nice way to talk about Oscar. Outside of the length, I enjoyed watching the proceedings on DVR ... relaxed and funny (Ellen did a nice job) and yet with a respect for the craft. Yes I said "the craft," and you can smack me in the morning. Gotta go to bed now. Oh, my feminist thought for the night: if the "important" awards are given out at the end, why must Best Actress necessarily precede Best Actor? They should switch it up, yo.

Peter O'Toole is halfway to becoming the Susan Lucci of the Oscars. The only one of the pictures I've seen this year was Little Miss Sunshine. I'm glad Alan Arkin won. J-Hud, OSCAR winner! So surreal. She was so classy. But all the haters will be on her case for again "forgetting" to thank Idol, like it's mandatory. Can't be mad at Martin Scorsese for finally getting one. I did like that Lucas poked fun at himself as the odd man out in their little group (because I was saying, "Hey, he doesn't belong there!") Greatest moment of the night: Al Gore winning Best Powerpoint Presentation. I liked Ellen as the host. But then again, I was the only one who enjoyed Letterman's hosting stint.

I meant to take a short nap before the show last night so I'd be able to watch the whole show. Unfortunately, the last week caught up with me, and I slept until about 3am.
Glad to see Whittaker won, and Scorsese! Finally! I haven't seen Dreamgirls, and probably won't, so I hope J.Hudson's win was well deserved. Helen Mirren can do no wrong in my eyes. Arkin, I'm sure, gave a great performance. He's just one of those people I am very meh about, but it's the performance on the screen that matters.
Now I have to go search out the complete list of winners.

It went waaaay over. I think it was due to end at 11:30 PM EST, and the reality was more like 12:30.
ETA: I have the eyebags to prove it. I call them my scorseses.
ETA2: Ellen had a bit near the end where, after commercial break, she appeared with vaccuum cleaner in hand, tidying the carpet and asking the front row stars to lift their legs for clearance. As a past usher, the thing I took note of was all the glittering confetti fluttering down from the ceiling at the very end. More like 'littering confetti' - that shit is like sand at the beach, it's a bitch to clean up.

VOLVERINE!!!
I thought Ellen was excessively bland -- as safe as Billy Crystal, but at least Billy puts together a little act that is based on the nominated movies and isn't generic for use under all conditions. I didn't think she was anywhere close to Jon Stewart or Chris Rock (although that is a tough standard to live up to ((and although we're never seeing Rock host this thing again.))
I think Norbit doing well might have hurt Murphy rather than helped him, because it said "here's a guy who will cash in and not give a crap." Ultimately, though, I don't think he deserved it (too much of his SNL "Hot Tub!" routine), and the Academy clearly was not thrilled about the movie anyway (it didn't even win Costumes or Song!) I'm not sure Arkin deserved it either -- it was a small part. Based on the reviews, I suspect Haley did, although I have yet to see Little Children. (I'm curious to find out exactly how little they are.)
I have been skeptical of the "Beyonce is jealous of Jennifer Hudson" talk, but B. did make a fool of herself yelling and flailing her arms in her "big number." What the heck was that.
The ceremony was way too long. Just announce the awards, let people speak when they accept them, sing all the songs, tell us who died last year, and add in a bit of comedy done solely by the host. No more aimless montages or interpretive dance numbers!

That was bad and funny because girl looked seriously pissed. I thought she was the worst of the three Dreamgirls. JHud was all right, but she seemed off somehow. The third Dreamgirl (I'm sorry, I don't remember her name) was fantastic. I was shocked a Dreamgirls song didn't win, but I wasn't upset. I also agree with the length. I was bitching about that to my husband. It isn't the speeches that are the problem, it's all the other extraneous crap. Just have a tribute to those who passed and be done with the tributes. And they really should not have had that tribute be at the 3.5 hour mark.

It was such a boring telecast though. Boring, inoffensive patter for the most part, excepting when Ellen was mingling in the audience. Pilobolus? What is heaven's name was that? That troupe came to my high school years ago, and they were entertaining, but I don't think the show really needed them.

What happened? He and the little girl from Little Miss Sunshine were presenting. They do their first schtick and list the nominees. Before they name the winner, Jaden reads his next line off the teleprompter, which is something about the list of nominess for the next award, which they were also presenting. The LMS girl kinda catches him then announces the first winner. It was cute. I haven't seen any of the movies nominated (I rarely do) but stayed up past midnight watching this stuff anyway. Overall it seemed like a fairly watered down field, just based on the winners, and I'm not really anxious to see many of the films that won or were nominated. Regarding the show, I enjoyed Al Gore's first appearance. But after a couple more times on the podium, it seemed he was trying a little too hard to be funny and hug-a-tree lovable and needed to get the hook to get him away from the microphone. I would truly be interested to see what made the Oscar presentations "Green".

I don't feel like doing anything but reading Oscar stuff this morning, I think because I'm sleepy. But, it does mean that I got to read about this backstage nastiness from the E! blog: QUOTE 9:46 p.m.: A reporter asks the Sound Mixing winners for Dreamgirls about Kevin O'Connell, one of the Sound Mixing losers for Apocalypto—and one of Oscars all-time losers, now having been vanquished 19 times. "I just wonder what Kevin's trying to do out there by trying to get an award by using sympathy," an absolutely straight-faced Oscar-holding Michael Minkler says. "And Kevin's an okay mixer, but enough's enough about Kevin."
9:47 p.m.: What?!
9:48 p.m.: "I think he should just take up another line of work," the Oscar-gloating Minkler adds.
9:49 p.m.: Huh?!
9:50 p.m.: Minkler and his team are gone—no chance for a follow-up question.
9:50 p.m.: I talk to the reporter who asked the question, checking to see if he heard what I heard. "He couldn't have been serious," the reporter says. "But that's what he said."

I don't think that dress did Kirsten any favors. The top of it looks too big around the neckline. But worse is her hair, makeup and pinched up face. If I picture the dress with a collar around the neck giving the dress a halter look with sheer fabric leading down to the "V" at the chest and bare shoulders, I think I'd like it better. But then there's the face and the bright red lips and the hair that could have been so much prettier if it was done in a manner that reflected the feel of the dress.

But three songs from Enchanted? Really? Not the song from Into the Wild? I'm sure Enchanted has some great music, but I don't think it should get three nominations. Johnny Depp is great in the role, and his accent is a million times better than Helena Bonham Carter's (as she once said, it is hard being posh), but I think he'll suffer from a perception that a musical role is 'light' - even though that part absolutely isn't. QUOTE (Two Keg Peg+Feb 24 2008, 06:35 PM) QUOTE (fofanna1+Feb 24 2008, 04:56 PM) What's up with Ryan Seacrest asking Jessica Alba is she was going to breast feed? He's worse than Joan Rivers. I think it was an attempt to prove he's not gay. "Boobs are my favorite! I like to touch them. With my hands. Caress them, like... they feel like... boobs! YEAH!" Ha! Or bags of sand. I adore Katherine Heigl and think she looks absolutely gorgeous but good lord are the haters going to have a field day with her publicly acknowledging her nerves which admittedly, was a little weird. ETA: First upset of the night! I was really pulling for Cate in I'm Not There, but Tilda Swinton was very, very good in Michael Clayton.

I think Tilda Swinton has amazing features; she's not exactly beautiful, but she's very striking. Wow, though she's a bad dresser. I don't think I've ever seen her look as good as she could at one of these things. She gave a great acceptance speech though. I loved Javier Bardem's too. It's clear he's got good genes from his mom too.
It was a little strange to see Owen Wilson up there presenting. I don't quite know what I expected from that moment.
YAY! Once song!

I loved that movie and the song was so beautiful. I don't have anything against Disney and I loved Enchanted but isn't it delightful to see the "little people" win? You can tell they don't have stylists which just makes the whole thing that much more charming. Well, isn't this marvelous? Jon Stewart brought her back out because she didn't get a chance to thank anyone.
