Is anyone else planning on watching this? So far I'm not caring at all about the new characters, no matter how hard the promos try. I'm more excited about Brenda and Kelly having scenes together again after all these years. I just hope this isn't a Gossip Girl rehash. That show is good, but there's no need for different versions of it to clutter the CW.

I'm definitely planning on checking it out. I loved the original so I'm going to give the retread a try.

I might DVR it and fast forward through all the non-Kelly and Brenda stuff. I, too, don't care about the newbies.

I think the first scene should be Brenda kicking Kelly's ass for sleeping with Dylan all those years ago when they were friends and Brenda was off somewhere and Kelly was a WHORE!

There is a pretty funny piece in the NYT today. The old cast members speak about the original 90210. Apparently, Jenny Garth is still carrying a grudge and Shannen Doherty still doesn't give a damn.
The weirdest thing about the Brenda, Kelly, Dylan triangle was when Brenda's Mom tried to make it Brenda's responsibility to ease Kelly's guilt over the situation. I know those two must have been thrilled at the breakup, but that was just so weird, "This is really hard for Kelly too."

I was disappointed.
It was entertaining in the way that pretty people in pretty locations with frivolous problems are always entertaining, but I was hoping for more of a tongue-in-cheek pastiche. It was way too earnest and not nearly witty enough.
Grandma Lucille seemed to be the only one in on the joke. I never thought Jessica Walter would be my favorite part of anything.
I liked Erin Silver okay because the actress seemed to be going for something other than total cliche (not so for Annie and the godawful Naomi) and I loved seeing Kelly and Brenda, but everyone else was blah.
I know we're only two episodes in but I don't think the pilot holds a candle to those of The O.C. or Gossip Girl. I wasn't enamored with either series' pilot when they first aired, but I think they're both better than this.

I was super excited at the beginning. Then my interest started to wane, and I ff through most of the teen stuff. I was disappointed too. There needs to be way more Brenda, though. I was like "She's only contracted for 4 episodes, and that's it?" I liked the nudge at Gabrielle Carteris with the comment about Hannah. Although, when the hell did they move back to California? Last I knew, the Vasquezes were on the East Coast. Overall, it was a big pile of meh. I'll probably record until I get bored. I'll at least watch Brenda's/Shannen's scenes.

I had a really low bar for this and I wasn't disappointed. I loved Jessica Walters (but I loved her on AD too, and she is really just playing Lucille Bluth anyway).
I agree that The O.C. started off way better, but they also burned out of plot ideas in their first season, so maybe they figure it is better to go slower?
I'm curious about the girl that was buying the drug, acting and stealing Naomi's money. I think that girl and Silver's plot could be interesting.
I admit to not liking Annie because the actress annoyed me on Degrassi.

I dug it. To an extent, at least. It was fine. Not good, not bad. Just fine. Incredibly watchable, funny at times, and ultimately better than the original pilot, but still, just fine. There were entirely too many characters to keep up with, the scenes were music video scene short, and the acting left a lot to be desired (and honestly, TWoPers can love Shannen Doherty all they want -- she really was not very good, although I loved seeing her there if that makes sense).
Still, the nods to the original were fun. The best, for me, might have been Nat calling for Willie, which was just such a random thing for the writers to throw in. Also, the "30" comment about Hannah was good, as was anything with Silver. Plus, they didn't have to fudge the numbers to get either girl into high school, which was nice. And had I not seen a huge magazine article with the headline, "KELLY'S A MOTHER" or something else spoilerish across the top, I would have been really taken back by that twist. I'm going to assume Dylan's the father since Brandon would never, ever, ever leave his kid like that. Especially not after everything with Kelly. Dylan would.
I also like the Wilson family. Annie and Debbie are perfectly cast in terms of looks, and I like that the whole family seems to like each other. The Walsh family were always fun to watch when they were acting like a family, and the same holds true here. The grandmother had some killer one-liners, and in fact, I liked all the adult cast. Not sure about the "you have a son" twist, but I appreciate that Harry didn't keep it a secret.
Also really enjoyed the chemistry between the teacher and Kelly, slightly awkward but ultimately fun. He's too young for her it seems, but I liked him a lot (with Kelly, in class, and as the coach). That could be fun.
So yeah, it's definitely no O.C. in terms of the pilot, and it's not even Gossip Girl, but it was definitely watchable, and it scored pretty high for The CW, so here's to more.

I only caught half of it because of a baseball game. I missed Brenda's appearance completely. Here is the weird thing. I cannot delete this episode from my DVR. I have deleted shows before and after this. Huh. Maybe someone really does have special powers.
On a serious note, has this ever happened to anyone else? I'm a Comcast customer.

And I'm done.
This show is stupid or erm, unimaginative. If MTV circa 2005 and 7th Heaven mated, their baby would be the new 90210.
Seriously, the plot of the third episode is family goes bowling and daughter tries to sneak away for a date while son tries to sneak away to see a movie. The third episode? Presumably, these writers have every plot available to them right now and bowling is what they come up with? In Beverly Hills? It's not surprising though. At best this show is hoping to be a retread of the original with the gloss of Gossip Girl and at worst, a glorified music video.
Right now, it's really failing down toward the latter. If you strip away the wit and intelligence and self-awareness that defines Gossip Girl, it's still (to borrow one of my favorite Julie Cooperisms) 'aspirational.' 90210 has half-assedly repackaged everything we've seen time and time again and is trying to sell it as fresh and new. That's actually what struck me about the pilot when I was watching last week. Gossip Girl genuinely is contemporary and cutting edge; 90210 is what Xers (and Boomers) have interpreted as contemporary and cutting edge.
Annie and Ethan's meta talk about The Hills tonight actually sums up this phenomenon perfectly. The Hills is very now in terms of our cultural radar (as the recent Rolling Stone cover story would suggest.) People can acknowledge its contemporary cache, but then Ethan goes on to say he thinks he could be the next Spencer. Yes, Spencer is famously associated with The Hills but effing nobody that actually watches the show wants to be Spencer. The only exposure the writer of that scene has had to The Hills is the Rolling Stone article. That's sloppy.
Meta is so popular right now (particularly on the CW) that it's verging on being overused so if you're going to use it, you better use it right. If you're lazy about it, you just call attention to the fact that you've misused it and nothing makes you look more out of touch than that.
It's not surprising really, the new 90210 is attempting every other convention and cliche of the genre hoping something lands, why not a little self-referentiality?
But it's lazy and boring.
GG is smart, OTH has a trainwreck WTF? appeal, the twenty minutes of Privileged I caught looked clever and engaging (and like an Ibsen play next to 90210,) that by comparison this 'spin off' has nothing to offer. It's hack execution and sort of an insult to the genre given the way teen/family melodrama has evolved over the last five years.
Apologies for the TWoPpiness of this post; I don't have the energy for the episode thread over there tonight.

I'll still try to watch the show, but the more they continue that ear-killing song about "MAMA WHO BORE ME", the more I want to do harm to my television, and the less likely I am to stick through another episode.

How is it possible for this show to be hokier than the first season of the original?

I'm only interested in the old group in a "where are they now" sort of way. I figure I'll just get my updates online. It seems like they are rehashing the original's story lines, but much faster.

90210 gets full seasonAnyone else think this smacks of desperation? I know the premier got boffo ratings by CW standards, but I thought they dropped of sharply the second week. I think the reboot is toast once Shannen's four episodes are done.

And then dead cowboy's sister (played by Nicholle Tom of The Nanny fame) having her tragic and angsty storyline as she attempts to matter.
Is there anyone here from the old usenet groups back during the first run? Anyone? M Ivan? Ah, the memories...

Sadly, I know too much -- Scott, David's friend shoots himself in the second season. He comes back from summer vacation into guns because he was in Oklahoma (with the Uncle that molested Sue, the sister that was on the Nanny)

Thanks, qb9b, Sue Scanlon, that's it. I only vaguely remember a lot of that, its been a long time. What I do remember is Nicholle giving a really overwrought and cringeworthy performance in the school hallway I think. And for some reason I'm picturing an outfit that looked like she decoupaged herself. And maybe even a beret, because when a character is trying too hard they always wear a beret.
