Two episodes on TiVO. Haven't seen either yet. Start without me.
TeslaNewton
Eh. I got nothin' until next episode airs.
Eris Rising
I'm finding it funny so far. Certainly the funniest new show out of the slim pickings this season, and it presents the creative/political process in a more compelling manner than what I was expecting.
Joe Don Faker
Last nite's episode, with Tina and her bi-curious shoes, was pretty funny.

"She said you looked like Jennifer Jason Leigh."
"She said that?!"
"Yes. I made her repeat it. I was sure she had said Jason Lee."

Call me a sentimental old fluff, but that whole Tina-dates-a-woman storyline was sweet. The flashbacks to childhood Tina... The volleyball coach counseling Tina with her big hair. I'm really liking Tina Fey. For some reason her character reminds me of Wing. Only, ya know, funny.

And Alec being able to read the room, and crazy Tracy with the two cards backwards ... sure it was in a preview, but that was gold. And Tracy's list of "wild cards" for his game: "...and fives are twos." Ha ha.
Eris Rising
"[A]ll the way to N...B...C..."

You know, Alec Baldwin just rocked the Hannibal.
TeslaNewton
Will it re-air on Bravo? I forgot to watch last night.
pinruT
I know this will sound horrible, but I barely recognized Tina in the scenes where she wasn't wearing glasses and she looked totally hot. I don't mind glasses, even wear them myself, but why do some people insist on wearing glasses that make them look less attractive?

I think the show is pretty funny, too and I really enjoyed the poker storyline. Alec Baldwin has finally turned me into a fan of his when I formerly hated all things Brother Baldwin.
ActonBell
Baldwin is so funny in this, especially last night. I'm glad the show is being moved to a new time slot, it deserves more of a fighting chance.

I wonder if the Stephanie March appearance sent the SVU maniacs into a tizzy?

They're just taking it as further proof of their Olivia/Cabot theories, I'm sure.

I just always assumed Tina was following in the glorious tradition of all the other insecure, gorgeous alt-chicks who feel they have to de-glam for street cred.

It could be that it's just not that important to her to look as attractive as she possibly can. It's just a pair of glasses but I know people who prefer glasses to contacts even though they look better in contacts.

If they can keep this up, this show might be close to sealing the deal. I wasn't a huge fan of anyone but Alec Baldwin in the first two episodes, but Tina Fey was funny and hot here. I don't at all mind that they de-emphasized the show-within-the-show in this episode, as it seems to work better as backdrop than as a central plot element.

And I'm sure this makes me some kind of enormous pop-culture ignoramus, but Mike-El, who is that? I do dig the glasses look -- good thing I married someone who pulls it off rather nicely herself.
Gatorbait
What's the new time slot? Hopefully one where I'm not already DVRing one show while watching another.

Singer/songwriter/reality-TV star Lisa Loeb.
skittlebrau
Dammit, I am so used to Wednesdays sucking that I keep forgetting to tape The Nine and 30 Rock.

I finally got around to watching the second episode, even though I saw the Yacht thing coming, it was still funny to me.

Though I think the name "The Girlie Show" is about the worst name for a sketch comedy show I've ever heard.
Finger Food
I love this show. I only happened to catch the first episode on Bravo because I was too lazy to change the channel after some 8,000th re-watching of a Project Runway episode. Thankfully, my laziness was rewarded for once.

Alec Baldwin should be on every show on TV.
Rex Dart
I liked this last ep a lot. I think it's because it dealt mostly with the two characters who are really working (Fey's and Baldwin's), and not as much with the ones who aren't yet. That's fine for now, and I'm sure they'll build up the other characters eventually. I personally tend to doubt I'll ever like the page character, but I appreciate the effort.

Tina's hot in any guise IMO. Admittedly, sometimes she looks squinty-eyed without her glasses a la Milhouse, but then sometimes she looks fantastic.
EssPee
For what it's worth, I liked the poker subplot too. A few good laughs and some -- gasp -- character development, especially of Idiot Boy. Most comedies need a good dumb character, and this was the first indication that he'll be a good foil to Jack.

TGS Starring Tracy Jordan is a much better title than The Girlie Show, too. I do wish they'd find a way to work in Rachel Dratch as a recurring character.

As for the ratings, I'm not sure putting the show up against CSI and Gray's Anatomy is a recipe for success, but you have to admit, it's counter-programming with a vengeance.
Gatorbait
Hmmm, that's a tough sell. But on the other hand, it is following The Office, which is a natural lead-in for 30 Rock. And comedies are what the NBC Thursday night "Must See TV" was always built around.

And I like how they're working Kenneth the Page into the show. Sure, he's one-note, but he's also an ancillary character so he's just supposed to provide one type of joke for the show. And I think it's funny that his one joke is that he's so vapid that he's inscrutable. Plus Jack McBrayer (the actor who plays Kenneth...I looked him up on IMDb, I'm not a TWoPping freak) is a friend of a co-worker. I feel the need to like him.

They do need to develop the different writers and Pete, though. And, like her character's worst fears, poor Jane Krakowski seems to be the odd person out on the show. But it's only a few weeks in. Hopefully it will get a long enough run so we can see exactly what Tina has planned.
Gladly
I've only caught a few minutes of 30 Rock episodes, but I've liked what I've seen for the most part. I adore The Office and Scrubs, so it's pretty likely that I'd just stick around for 30 Rock.

I'm hoping that because of the overwhelming majority of viewers either watching CSI or Grey's, that this comedy block has less pressure. Just getting decent numbers would be a feat when 40 million people are split between two shows

I did read some time ago that Jane Krakowski was meant to be a more minor character, but NBC didn't think that Rachel Dratch had enough appeal to be a major character--so their roles changed emphasis. Defamer synopsis of the story.
Rex Dart
I'm really finding the cutesy making-fun-of-product-placement-while-doing-it act to be insulting (they did it with Snapple in this ep, and with the "GE Trivection Oven" in the premiere.) I'd rather just have the cheesy placement than have them additionally try to sell me the notion that it's hip. Very annoying (not to mention it's a joke that's kinda played out.)

Also, the Baldwin "blooper reel" went on way, way, way too long.

The rest of the ep was ok, but I dunno. Something is not quite clicking here.
TeslaNewton
Dammit! I forgot about this again. I'm never going to watch this show.
ladybird
I agree the Snapple thing was irritating, but I loved the Baldwin blooper reel. I was cracking up throughout the whole thing. This show is making me love Alec Baldwin. He's now officially my favorite Baldwin brother - it used to be Daniel, because of Homicide, but the whole crack addict/car thief thing is working against him.
a.j.
I think the show is starting to hit its stride. I particularly enjoy the relationship between Fey and Baldwin. Tina Fey is a great fake newscaster, but not so great at the acting, so I think her chemistry with Baldwin is helping her along. I loved "don't act cute, Lemon, you're too old for that."

The Snapple thing has been done before, but better that than Jesus as the head of Standards and Practices. If you're trying to stick it to your boss, at least make an effort to brush up against funny at some point.
fofanna1
Yes, this show is about a thousand times better than that other show about faux SNL.
Gladly
Last night was the first time I watched this show all the way through. I think Alec Baldwin is so perfectly cast. His scene with Liz in the middle of the night is the one part that made me laugh the most, "If you were any other woman in the world, I'd be turned on right now."

I think there were a couple of shots at Studio 60. Alec Baldwin mentioned Strindberg, and then Liz and her producer have that conversation about adult literacy and high school graduation rates. I also loved that the writers described their work as "skits." Very daring, Ms. Fey.
Eris Rising
I agree that the product placement was played out, but I enjoyed the blooper reel, as well as the background joke of Ghostface Killa being called to the stage with Yo-Yo Ma. Also whatsername getting together with the old man extra, and Tracey's taking advantage of the illiteracy suspicions in order to leave work early.
pinruT
I enjoyed the traps they layed for Tracy once they figured out he was faking it. He didn't fall for the "Tracy has a tiny penis" poster, but the "Hot lesbian auditions" got him. Gotta hate that.

Just thinking about Baldwin's acting ability during the blooper reel had me laughing. Also his glances at the camera, while he was saying, "No I'm not looking at the camera".

I think the timing of the supersized versions of all three of NBC's line-up detracted. After 24 minutes of any sitcom, I'm ready for it to be over.

I've really been enjoying this show, but I'm kind of disappointed that they got rid of Rachel Dratch in favor of the blond lady (I'm horrible with names). I would feel horrible if I was her and had quit SNL to be a part of this show and then been pushed out.
Eris Rising
They were scheduled to let go of her anyway, as part of some cost-cutting that the network did. SNL also let go of Horatio Sanz (Yay!) and Chris Parnell (Boo! Hiss!). At least Dratch is getting some work.
max power
Watched the show last night for the first time (LOST kept getting in the way). I think I have a new Thursday night show. Even though Arrested Development has made fun of the product placement before, I still found the Snapple jokes funny. The Strindberg reference killed me. Ha, bite me Sorkin.

I didn't really care for Tracy Morgan on SNL, but he's great here. "Did you know y can sometimes act like a vowel?" "George Will just keeps getting more and more conservative." Not to mention that action movie scene where he didn't know his lines.

The reason I'm giving this show a chance even though it hasn't made me fall down laughing yet (though, this week's was pretty good, the Snapple Dude getting off the elevator was just too good a call back) is because Tracy Morgan and Alec Baldwin are both terrific. I've always thought Tracy was good but never really had a place on the real SNL. It's almost like this show was made for him. He does the "crazy but not stupid black guy" schtick like no one else.

Me too. I never realized how droll he could be. Unfortunately the majority of the show leaves me blah. I don't catch it often but when I do I think there is a glimmer of something there but they just aren't getting it over the line. Sounds like maybe there is hope for it but I think they'd better get moving on getting it there or it may soon bite the dust.

I read an article last weekend that said while the show is doing poorly in overall ratings, it ranks like #7 (or maybe #17, I forget) in attracting the high-income demographic. I think that's what basically saved The Office after its disappointing ratings in the first season and am hoping it'll do the same for this show.

I love this show and I love Alec Baldwin on it. He killed me last night with the, "I'm waiting for a call from 1983" line.
Gracie
"Technology is cyclical."

xii
I wish I liked anyone else's performance half as much as I like Baldwin's. Everyone else seems to be trying waaaaaay too hard, while he seems effortlessly hilarious. The rest of the cast is doing big Broadway stage shouting, and he's cracking me up with deadpan minimalism.
Rex Dart
Yeah, I think that's a good observation. Everyone is kind of doing their own thing; the characters don't play off each other too much to create something that's more than the sum of its parts. So many scenes seem to consist of "Alec or Tracy act wacky while everyone stands around and goes 'well, okay' or 'wow, that was sure weird.'" A show doesn't need eight straight men.

I enjoyed the Beeper Guy storyline, and I think that's the type of thing that needs to be done so that Tina has a character to work with and isn't just standing around making faces. I still feel like Tracy Morgan (and Jane Krakowski) haven't been worked very organically into the plots at all.
floundering
Gracie, that line made me snort, too.

I'm enjoying the show well enough, but only because of Baldwin and my residual fondness for Tina Fey. The characters really do need to mesh better, or at least respond to each other as humans instead of punchlines. And I kind of hate the Tracy Jordan character. I get his whole "big movie star on the slide, keeping the street cred" backstory and all, but can he please stop shouting?

Did Rachel Dratch really quit SNL for, like, a ten-second weekly cameo on this?

Okay ep. They did a good job of setting a frantic mood, and of utilizing Tracy better. His dancing was funny. And Chris Parnell's cameo was excellent. But the show just seems to always have dead spots.

I think I'm actually rooting for Tina and Beeper Guy. He bought her a cheeseburger! That's real white love.
Gracie
Not to mention the nougie (sp) he gave her when she was leaving for work. I actually said "Awww".

Jack (to an obviously distraught Liz): "What's the matter? Did the Liberty lose again?"

I also loved this exchange from the sensitivity training session:

Tracy: "Uncle Tom!"

Twofer: "You can't call me that if you haven't read the book!"

Offscreen voice: "What book?"

The Rural Juror ... good ep, but not enough Baldwin.

I wanted more like:
"Sorry Jenna, I smelled crazy in here and assumed it was you."

Also, the Jenna's brown hair line.

Loved the GE corporate chart segment. And the Barbara Walters interview at the end.
max power
"I assumed it was Oral Germwhore."

"Let me tell you about how I helped Arsenio."
"Hall or Billingham?"

Also, Con Air the musical. And Workout with Whoopi.
Rex Dart
Today's great Baldwin delivery:

"Do you like Phil Collins?"
"...I have two ears and a heart, don't I?"

The "Rural Juror" gag and Baba Wawa all worked very well. And Jane K. finally had something to do: smoldering tension with Tina! Where's the fanfic?? Wasn't too nuts about Tracy's Foreman grill plotline. (I hope that, just as we found out more in this ep about "The Rural Juror", we one day learn more about his film "Who Dat Ninja?")

The show is definitely becoming very likeable, if nothing else; I like all these people. That goes a long way.

I don't really watch infomercials, but I did see one once for some fish oil or some damn thing where the guy was going on and on and on about how the medical community "doesn't want you to know" how well this product works. I wonder if Dr. Spaceman's complaining about his "bread research" being ignored was based on that particular one, or whether that's a generic infomercial thing.

Every time I think I can't possibly love Tina more...*swoon*...

From today's Rush & Malloy column in the New York Daily News:
QUOTE
Tina Fey dissed archfoe Aaron Sorkin Sunday night at the Writers Guild Awards. The "30 Rock" star competes with Sorkin's "Studio 60": Both take place behind the scenes at a show like "Saturday Night Live," where Fey was head writer. Wiggling around the Hudson Theatre stage in a party frock with plunging decolletage, Fey told the crowd, "I hear Aaron Sorkin is in Los Angeles wearing the same dress - but longer, and not funny."
skittlebrau
I enjoyed Defamer's response to that tidbit:

QUOTE
Once one gets the initial Oh, snap!-style sting of the remark, her joke seems patently unfair, as Sorkin's show is intentionally unfunny; in constructing a drama, the celebrated writer's mission is to take on weightier issues affecting sketch comedy shows, like the unexpected budget overruns that can cripple a production when a procession of antagonistic natural predators are lost beneath a busy sound stage.

Although, the two shows don't really compete, being on the same network, except in the media. Eh, whatever, minor nitpick.

Episode: Golf Outing / Benefit Dinner / Liz is a *unt

Enjoyed the flashbacks of Liz being insensitive. It was like peeking into an alternate universe where Wing is the star. :-P "Oh, Sherlock Homo is here to solve the case of the gay sweater!" and the other writers just look at each other like WTF?. Then her brusquely passing along the baby photo everyone else is cooing about. (And, cupcakes with miniature chocolate bars baked into them...? Where have these been all my life.)

Mostly though, I was enjoying the Jack D.-Tracy conflict play out. Jack McBrayer (Kenneth) tells an anecdote about shooting this episode: apparently Baldwin had a lit cigar in his mouth and turned quickly to make a remark, accidentally mashing the cigar into the mouth of a supporting player, thus extinguishing it. Of course he apologized profusely.

The throwaway joke about the golf couple raised a smile:

"Now we're stuck with this guy, who's mostly known for getting caught using his corporate card to pay for all his visits to gay stripclubs! ... Sorry, Jennifer, you were going to find out at some point."

(cut to the guy schimmying behind Kenneth, schooling him on his golf form.)

The funniest moment to me, though, occurred just before they cut to the opening credits. Jack is gazing lovingly at the painting of Rip Torn and lets out some little random burst of song.

What?! JDF, I expected better of you. That song is "Simply the Best", by Tina Turner, which was also used to great effect by David Brent in the original Office.

30 Rock is consistently beating out the other NBC Thurs night sitcoms in terms of t3h funny. I loved the whole bit with Tina being inspired by a Designing Women ep at 3:30 am and taping it when it reran at 5:30. It's also a great show for rewatching, because I miss a lot of good lines from laughing so hard, like "What is AUX?" and Alec promising to cast for Tracy's fake diabetic daughter.
Joe Don Faker
You are totally correct of course, mr. power. The timing of his little sung line was great there... took me off-guard.

While we're on the subject of Alec's comic chops, I enjoyed that cobbled together "Valentime's Day" montage, with Jack D. growing steadily more drunk while navigating various manhattan environs. I think what really got me was him continuing to rant on about his ex-wife while gesturing with the pair of prongs from one of those ubiquitous "gourmet deli" buffets. Every time I think I can't possibly love Tina more...*swoon*...

From today's Rush & Malloy column in the New York Daily News:

Tina Fey dissed archfoe Aaron Sorkin Sunday night at the Writers Guild Awards. The "30 Rock" star competes with Sorkin's "Studio 60": Both take place behind the scenes at a show like "Saturday Night Live," where Fey was head writer. Wiggling around the Hudson Theatre stage in a party frock with plunging decolletage, Fey told the crowd, "I hear Aaron Sorkin is in Los Angeles wearing the same dress - but longer, and not funny."
I'm infamous in certain places for my blind Sorkin fangirl-ism... and even I have to say, that comment of Tina's was Really. Fricking. Funny. As is 30 Rock an astonishing majority of the time.

Hi, Miss Hell, you've been missed and Fey is great. I actually like both shows but this one has got Studio 60 well beaten when it comes to the LOL funny.

Any MST3K fans catch the director credit on the last 30 Rock episode?

It was none other than the worm-face himself, Don Scardino from "Squirm."

Clearly he didn't let that worm in his egg cream keep him down.

I can't believe that this show would bring in better ratings then 30 Rock. I thought his last show was a huge flop.
